Qtags – the quick way to remember by SMS

I’ve been enjoying the Qtag (www.qtags.com) blog for a few weeks now. I like their product concept.  As a bit of a geek, I do shy away from what they offer. I like the idea of companies having their own shortcode and infrastructure. However the reality is that it’s a bit of an arse and quite expensive to manage your own mobile infrastructure and communications with users when your centre of excellence lies in a totally different area.  So I think Qtags are well placed to benefit a whole array of companies and industries.  Well, let’s be clear, they already are helping out a whole lot of people.

As always you do need a bit of traction to get things off the ground — something that definitely appears to be happening, particularly if their blog news is anything to go by.

Here’s the Qtag proposition for advertisers (http://www.qtags.com/adOverview.html):

What is a qtag?
qtags are a way to quickly tag something you want to remember. The name qtags is short for quick-tags.

Each qtag is assigned a unique web-address and descriptive text reply. Advertisers display qtags on any existing print, online or broadcast campaign.

The ad’s viewers or listeners use a mobile phone to text the qtag to 78247, a short-code that works with all major United States and Canada carriers.

The texter immediately receives the qtags’ reply and web link, but does not receive any further communication from the advertiser and does not end up on mailing lists.

Advertisers can update the web link and reply text anytime, real-time and have access to reporting showing volumes of texts, click-throughs and links forwarded to friends.

  1. I’ve just come across this post. I think the qtags idea is clunky and not much in terms of value add. I have to have the qtag in front of me before i send it to the short code. Txtfo, set up by Amir Ahmad in the UK allows a user to send a word i.e. iPod Nano to a short code. The information is processed and an sms sent back with a short description, website, store and example price you can expect to purchase the product! Now that’s value add!
