Google.com banned by Hutchinson 3g UK

I read that Google News is now available as a mobile version. I thought I’d try it out!

Unfortunately, the only normal phone I’ve got is the Sony Ericsson on
Three.  I’ve paid for "mobile websites" so I was sure that the world’s
number two site (Myspace is number one now, eh?) would be available in
this ‘package’.

Not at all!

If you go to www.google.com in your Three UK browser, it
takes you to the ‘suggest a site’ page.  That’s because it’s not approved by Three —
you have to send them a text message and hope that someone receives it
and adds it to the list.  What is it, are they waiting for Google to
phone up and offer them bucketloads of cash or something?

What absolute RUBBISH.  Seriously, I must be going mad.  Someone else with a Three phone tell me I’m just imagining this?

There’s nothing for it. I am going to phone them up, brave the Indian call centre, pay off the
rest of contract, cancel and be done with it.  I simply can’t stand
these type of stupid limitations!

This from an organisation that wants to be a "media" company not a "phone" company.

  1. Have you tried downloading Opera Mini as a browser on your phone

If you have got a Java-enabled phone it should work

then you can break out of the telco’s “walled garden” – I have done it here in Oz

  2. I chose 3 as my network with a Nokia N70 because I wanted to be future-proof for a while. I was gutted when I too discovered that you can’t actually get to the WWW with 3. When I was with O2 on my Nokia 6600 I could go anywhere. First you have to get an add-on for mobile websites (if you don’t, you can’t even get out of mobile.three.co.uk) but even then you can only get to ‘approved sites’ which are numbered only in the hundreds. Otherwise you get the crappy “Suggest a site” page. I tried Opera Mobile (which didn’t come pre-installed for some reason…) and you get to the same “Suggest a site” page, only it’s browser sniffing, and tells you to use the default browser. Ah, 3 have a deal with Nokia’s default browser then…

Off to Opera Mini we go… Hmm it crashes every time. Ah well. At least my contract with 3 is only 12 months long…

  3. yeah a know how u all feel regarding the google website on the 3 network, i feel its rubbish that we cant get into the no1 website, i cant wait to end my contract with 3 and go to vodafone

  4. Hi,

Was doing some research on my recent post and saw your post about ‘3’. I like it. If you get a chance come take a look at my post.

If you don’t get a chance for a while it won’t be on the front page so here is the title.

Mobile Phone companys are a little nuts. At least in the UK
