3 UK’s data card

I was just reading the Engadget story quoting Cellular News about the new 3 UK data card. £45 for 512mb of data. They’re apparently throwing in a Skype starter kit.

Oh come on. I will eat my hat if Skype or any VOIP application works to sufficient quality via an operator’s 3g data card while I’m whizzing across Essex sat on the train on the way back from work.

When I read about this sort of thing, I do get very excited. Then tech-reality kicks in and I feel a fake smile spreading across my face. I can’t even dial out using Skype Out properly enough to let anyone I’m calling hear me properly – and that’s on a broadband connection. Goodness knows what it would be like on a data card. Get it working properly THEN release it to the consumer marketplace PLEASE.

I’ll need to try it shortly on the Vodafone one and see if it’s at all usable.

You never know. I’m well up for being completely surprised!
