PayPal Mobile text payment service arrives!

Link: Darla Mack: Paypal Offers Mobile Paypal and Text 2 Buy.

You can use your mobile phone to securely send money and make payments within the U.S. and Canada. To use PayPal mobile, you must activate your mobile phone. Activating your phone requires setting a secure mobile PIN and confirming phone ownership.

You can send your payment either through text message to the PayPal mobile short code 729725 (PAYPAL) or by calling the automated voice system at 1-800-4PAYPAL.
You can also purchase items using Text to Buy or make donations using Text to Give.

Well, butter me in honey and call me Kenneth!

I’ve been out for a lot of the day so didn’t get a chance to catch my feeds.  Here I was browsing through Darla’s blog when I came across this PayPal mobile story.

Eagle eye readers who happen to work at PayPal may have wept at my recent prediction that it would probably take PayPal mobile a good few months to get anything out the door.  Er. Now that I look back, I said 6 months.

What a difference a fortnight makes.  It’s time for me to eat my words, big time.

On the 6th of March I wrote that TextPayMe were wiping the floor with PayPal.  Now PayPal Mobile is available (US and Canada only, alas), I wonder what this means for TextPayMe, Obopay and some of the other players in Europe?

It’s either super news, because they’ve got a big category player to work against orrrrrr it’s raaaather bad news.  I wonder, I wonder.
