Let me be the first to stick my hand in the air and point out that my experience with the Sony Ericsson campaign managed by TXT4.com was flawed from the get go: I got the shortcode wrong.  I replaced the 8 for the 6 in the address.  Thus, I thought it correct to respond to my mistake with the same vigor that I brought to bear in writing the original article (which, I’ve taken down).

I asked TXT4.com for a statement of explanation that I could publish — and here it is:

We’d like to make it clear to your readers that your experience was a result of you misreading the advert you saw. At TXT4, we’re committed to providing a transparent, convenient and responsive service to consumers who wish to text in to receive information.
 
The ad that you saw actually carried the shortcode 64118. You can see an advert from this campaign here:

As you say in the article, you were viewing the advert, which was on the side of your bus, as a reflection from a building you were passing.
 
Bose campaign is set up using the same keyword – MUSIC1 – on shortcode 84118, but is not yet live. This is the reason you did not receive confirmation of your original text nor the STOP text you sent in afterwards.  We do follow marketing protocol and run a universal STOP service on all live campaigns.

Regarding the use of the txt4.com web address to supply privacy information: as suppliers of the service and registered as a data controller with the Information Commission, the handling of data is our responsibilty and therefore we’re obliged to provide details on data use and privacy to consumers using the service. We make our position in relation to our clients and to consumers explicit in this statement. Hosting this information on our website also allows us to offer an unsubscribe service to any consumers who wish to be removed completely from our database.
