Link: Death Knell for Watches at MobHappy.
I was just browsing through MobHappy — it’s been a while since I caught up with my required reading — and saw Russell’s post here on the death knell for watches:

usiness Week reports on a new survey by Seiko that indicates that ownership of wrist watches has fallen from 70% in 1997 to only 46% today. Why? People use their mobiles to tell the time these days.

Just last week I was sat at this Conference when someone asked me why I didn’t wear a watch. I found it a ridiculous question. The person asking the question did so in a tone that aimed to suggest I was less of a person for being without a watch. The only reason I’d wear a watch is, as Russell astutely points out, if I felt my dress required it — i.e. a fashion statement.

I’m a fan of Les Architects du Temps (”Ebel”) so I have a couple of them hanging around. Rarely do I ever bother to wear them.

I use my mobile for time keeping — both to let me know the time but also to keep track of my calendar.

I used to be the weird one in my group of friends: the exception who didn’t wear a watch. In fact, I used to quite enjoy going to parties and having people exclaim ‘you’re not wearing a watch?’

It doesn’t happen that often now. A lot more of my friends don’t bother with watches. We all have mobiles. Gosh. What would I be thinking if I was sat running Casio’s watch division? Oooh dear.

Time to innovate, I say.
