Mobical.net offers free mobile data sync

Picture_7_12Hot on my post last night about making sure your mobile contacts are backed up, Alfie posted this comment:

For all my SyncML needs I use www.mobical.net, a totally free syncml service, which has blown me away with ease of use and functionality.

He’s not wrong.  I flew over to the Mobical site, registered a free account and I was synching my data about 3-4 minutes after I read Alfie’s comment.

Mobical synchronises your mobile phone data – contacts, calendar, to-do list, and places it in a nicely arranged web desktop for you.  It’s beautifully designed — lots of good user interface treats to make the experience enjoyable and slick — click on contacts and woosh, there are all your contacts.  Click on a contact and the details pop up on the right of the screen.  Very nice.

One of the real trauma issues with synchronising your data is if there’s a mistake — generally a user mistake — which causes your device to sync it’s data out of existence.   This has happened to me quite a few times and it’s a complete arse.  Mobical have got a rather cool solution for this, should it happen.  Quoting from the ‘backup’ page:

Here you can create backups of your data on Mobical. Automatic backups are created every time you make a successful sync as well, just in case. Click here to create a new backup.

Created backups are safely stored on this server and are not affected by any future synchronization. If anything should happen with your contacts or meeting, restoring a backup is fast and easy to do. Click on the restore icon to the right of the desired backup to restore it.

This is smart thinking.  For all those like me who sync their mobile data daily with their computer — think how critical it is for you.  If your data is important to your business, I think you’re much better adding a mobile sync service such as Mobical into the mix — so that should you lose your device, you can get at your data from any web browser… you don’t need to wait ’til you get to your own computer.

I can very much see me sat at an internet cafe or a business meetinge trying to remember the name of someone or something and flipping up Mobical on the nearest web browser to get hold of the information.  I don’t feel so naked.  Even if I lost my handset, I can get at the data from any browser… then get another handset and sync it.  😀

I recommend you check out www.mobical.net and get yourself account.

Just remember: the next time you lost your device, drop it in the sea or lend it to a 5 year old who factory resets it, you’ll be jolly annoyed (as the phrase goes) that you didn’t sync your data from your mobile when you had a spare five minutes sat reading this text.
