Redknee Inc., a leading provider of innovative infrastructure software that monetises and personalises services and content for mobile users, today announced the general availability of its IP Rating & Charging Solution for network operators worldwide. Redknee’s IP Rating & Charging Solution enables operators to monetise new IP-based revenue streams with a powerful rating and charging engine, in both pre-IMS and IMS environments.

“The sweetspot for wireless telecoms today is paving the way for the over-the-air buying of premium content,” said Dan Baker, director of OSS/BSS research at Dittberner Associates, Inc. “Traditional flat-rate and volume-based billing plans simply don’t drive the spur-of-the-moment purchases that can really boost revenue. If they did, then Amazon.com would stop what it’s doing and start a Book-of-the-Month Club. To transform themselves into true direct marketers, telecoms need to invest in real-time rating and monetisation systems that deliver the same kind of two-way dialog that makes customers comfortable buying online. This announcement is significant for two reasons: its one of first real-time billing solutions that exploits deep packet inspection and it comes from Redknee, one of the most forward-thinking billing/payment enablers in the market today.”

I understand the perspective of Redknee and the mobile operators trying to increase revenues. However charging for different types of data? Hmmm. No. I don’t want to pay £1.00 to pay for data on BBC whilst the same data usage on Google would cost me £3.00. That’s not going to work for me, from a user perspective, at all.

For me, a of data meg is a meg is a meg, whether I’m using Skype, MSN, web or email.
