10ptext launches .mobi site

10ptext.co.uk, the service which allows you to send text messages to anyone in the world for 10p, has launched a .mobi presence.

The 10ptext.mobi site allows users to register, use and top up through their mobile browser. I reckon this could be a rather useful addition for users needing away from their computers.

If you’ve a mobile to hand, you can check it out by typing in ’10ptext’ in the address bar and then screwing about to try and get your mobile’s dictionary to recognise the ‘mobi’ domain extension.

    Hmmm, I’m confused as to what 10ptext offer that skype don’t, when skype sms is 4-5p per text worldwide.

    “10text.co.uk”, the people who let you send really expensive texts from a website have launched a .mobi version of their website (even though their brand name has “co.uk” in it) that lets you…..send texts from your mobile phone.

    erm, is it just me or is the whole world disappearing so far up it’s own behind that we will soon be brushing our teeth with our mobiles!

    After trying it in IE7 and downloading the resulting file, it appears to be a WML based version of their existing sites. My thought is why the need for an additional domain? Google, BBC, and many others are heading towards intelligent device analysis on their sites – ie if you access google.com from a mobile it recognizes that and serves up a ‘lite’ version of the site, instead of the full blown thing.

    I think that there is mileage in the dot mobi suffix. If StevieP prefers computers so be it, but the rest of the world wants the Internet to move onto mobile phones.

    There is a commercial factor to dot mobi that shouldn’t be overlooked. Dot com has been around for more than a decade. Newbies don’t have a chance to get their hands on exciting domains any longer. .Mobi domains are opening up a new playing field. It just means the world is moving on, if you don’t like it fine. I for one see a business opportunity as big as back then, 1999-2001 when everybody wanted to own a domain.

    This is why we are soon going to offer domains selling .Mobis only. Not interested in anything else. The site will be called Mobidiculous.

    PS: Alex we are not there yet, there is hardly any browser that renders website in a pixel perfect version. Not even Opera Mini. We may be heading in that direction, but do you want to wait for it? What is really necessary are design editors like Dreamweaver that aid the development of wml or .mobi sites.

    They should be using a .mobi extention not .co.uk
