Truphone's N80 client?

Rumour has it that there's an N80 client arriving shortly from Truphone. That'd be interesting to see. More details if and when.

  1. Yes please 🙂

I’ve always wondered exactly what you could do with the SIP settings on the N80.. seems to support SIP but not quite? Also apparently the ‘new’ Internet version of the N80 (translation: same thing with different software) has a SIP client on it too.

  2. I’ve got both the TruPhone and Gizmo/SIPphone SIP settings running on my E61…. Works great. I like how the multiple settings (locations) in TruPhone pick up where you are by hotspot and auto-connect if you choose. You could certainly set that up (at least now that I know you can) with Gizmo as well, but TruPhone has made it pretty straight forward — though it’s still far from mainstream.

My E61 auto connects and is ready to do VOIP when I walk in my house and I’m sure the eventual N80 client will work well too.

  3. Hi. Thanks for the mention. Yes, we are announcing Truphone on the N80 today and will be showing it at the Symbian Smartphone Show in London.

It will be available for public download shortly. The press release is below fyi

Truphone launches true mobile VoIP service for Nokia’s best-selling N80 handset

Demonstrations at Symbian Smartphone Show, Stand 117a

Symbian Smartphone Show – London, UK – October 17th 2006: Truphone today announced a beta version of its free VoIP download for Nokia’s best-selling, Wi-Fi-enabled N80 mobile handset. Available from the Truphone website later this month, the download instantly brings free and low-cost mobile calls within easy reach of all N80 handset owners.

Overwhelming customer demand for the N80 download became evident following the launch in September of Truphone’s download for the Nokia E-series. Today’s announcement therefore represents a step-change in the availability of true mobile VoIP for the mass market.

There are no hidden or monthly fees for any Truphone users and calls between ‘on net’ Truphone handsets are free, worldwide. As a launch offer to the end of the year, USA users benefit from free calls to USA and Canada, while the unique UK telecoms market enables Truphone to offer UK users calls some two billion landlines in major countries for free. All other Truphone calls from the user’s mobile are billed at characteristically low VoIP rates.

“Support for Nokia’s N80 handset brings true mobile VoIP to the mass market and gives Truphone genuine consumer appeal,” said James Tagg, Truphone’s chief executive. “Truphone routes calls entirely via the internet ensuring the lowest possible call costs to consumers whether in their home country or travelling abroad, unlike ‘calling card’ services masquerading as mobile VoIP.”

In September, Truphone announced its first download, for Nokia’s latest E-series handsets, with a promise that a download for N-series handsets would follow imminently. Support for additional Wi-Fi-enabled phones, including those built on the Windows Mobile platform, will come in due course.

Like the download for the E-series, Truphone’s N80 download is beta software. The company has opened a discussion forum at http://www.mobilevoipforum.org where users and developers alike are encouraged to comment, question or contribute

  4. Now then.. I’m not being funny, and I totally understand the pressures of deadlines, software development and the launch of a new product. But..

The press release went out about 3 weeks ago now. Somehow along the way virtually every single journo that got the PR has managed to write the article in such a way that makes the reader believe they can go to the website, download the app, and be making VOIP calls on their N80 within 5 minutes.

Alas, no. Although Truphone very kindly put a ‘register your interest’ form on the page, there’s still no sign of the N80 client. It’s been ‘available in the next few days’ (quote from the Truphone site) since that press release was put out to the world. Few days has turned into nearly three weeks now, and still no word on the release date. Even the Truphone forums are a bit vague.

Right, whinge over 🙂 If anyone at Truphone is listening and fancies letting me try the N80 client, I’ll write lots of nice things. Providing it works of course 😉

  5. Thanks for your comment. We know lots of people are keen to get their hands on the N80.

We’re sorry it’s not available for download yet – the product IS ready, it’s just got to clear the signing process. Please see this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBXv68CchJo just uploaded of the Truphone CEO, James Tagg, explaining the status.

Thanks, and we promise we are doing everything we can to get it to you.
