Cath Kidston Fanatic Nail SMS Text News Chief Blogger to Flagpole

Remember my post about Cath Kidston?

Remember how I started off being shocked by the vomit-designs, and by the end of the article, changed my mind to say that they (Carphone & Cath) had clearly got something correct since people were buying them?

Well this comment was just posted to the article by ‘Twist’ of Twist Industries:

I can’t believe in this day and age that someone could write an article like this.
1. How can a design be ‘useless’, that’s nonsense
2. How could Cath Kidston design a whole handset, she’s a fashion and homeware designer?
3. Do you really think that being in Wikipedia makes someone so great?
4. I’m sure I couldn’t pick you out of a line up, expect if you were standing trial for crimes against sensible reporting
5. Your opinion by the end of the article seems to rest on the fact that a fit bird has bought a phone, this is immature and completely discredits the entire article

Not what I’d call very well balanced and informed journalism….

Hi Twist and thanks for taking the time to comment! Let’s address each point:

I can’t believe in this day and age that someone could write an article like this.

Well, it’s a blog post, not a factual article — almost 60 million blogs out there now in the blogosphere, all venting forth opinion. SMS Text News is one of’em!

1. How can a design be ‘useless’, that’s nonsense

It can be useless if I describe it. Purely my opinion.

2. How could Cath Kidston design a whole handset, she’s a fashion and homeware designer?

Not the whole handset, I mean design the look and feel of the handset — the keys, the screen, the form factor, and so on. Let Nokia do the electronics, let her do the ‘look’. Not just the snap on fascias.

3. Do you really think that being in Wikipedia makes someone so great?

Great? No. Wikipedia is useful and their entries are usually quite informative.

4. I’m sure I couldn’t pick you out of a line up, expect if you were standing trial for crimes against sensible reporting

Agreed, but I reckon you might be home and dry if it came to picking SMS Text News out of a line up of opinionated mobile bloggers.

Your opinion by the end of the article seems to rest on the fact that a fit bird has bought a phone, this is immature and completely discredits the entire article

Not what I’d call very well balanced and informed journalism….

I was sat amongst an array of experienced, credible mobile and technology journalists only last week — I was careful to introduce myself as a blogger and not a ‘proper journalist’. I have no higher calling. This a blog — it’s generally opinion. Informed opinion. Informed based on my experience working in and around the mobile industry. But still very much opinion.

It is not and will never been well balanced, informed journalism. For that, you should look to Fox News…..er……. I mean Bloomberg.

As for my opinion of Cath Kidson resting on a ‘fit bird’ sporting the handset — sure thing — that’s critical. That girl made a purchase choice at the Carphone Warehouse store — and that’s what most interested me. I thought that she’d have gone for an LG Chocolate or a Motorola, but no — she chose Cath Kidston. Which prompted me to change my viewpoint. I think they’ve done a good job. Godawful design, as far as I’m concerned, but then again, I’m not the target audience.

  1. Seems like ‘Twisted’ is the sort of person who revels in writing to Anne Robinson of the BBC.

I think he/she may also miss out the fact that there are many mobile industry individuals who read this blog, people who have severe background experience of services, marketing, design, technology, corporate culture and many other facets of the consumer mobile industry and the major players in that industry. Ewan is part of that same crowd.

If Ewan says that phone is ARSE, it is ARSE……………………………

If you think about it, the phone manufacturers are only pandering to the basic necessities of throwaway culture [or should I say planned obsolesence]. My view is that the Cath Kidson phone is a derisable attempt to upsell mobile consumers to yet another phone – even though they might not need it. We will have many more attempts to do this in the near future with more and more designs aimed at niche [but sizeable consumer audiences].

PS. If the girl who bough the phone is fit, why can we not have a picture of her in the blog?.
