Ewan, ping Jay, he has managed to void his warranty and coerce the US firmware onto his UK T-Mobile branded E61.

But really, people shouldn't have to go through all this hassle to get the latest firmware!

Surely the secret source to all this is that Truphone works on any WiFi phone no matter what the firmware? I tried to get Truphone, oh, around June in 2006 but said it did not support my E70 yet and would email me when available... still waiting.

I'm impressed that they raised £12.5m when, in the UK at least, it feels like it only works on a few thousand E61 with the correct pre installed software.

Agreed that the manufacturers and operating systems need to find a way to help seamless enablement of third party apps for the benefit of all. But in the meantime its up to the lithe, skillful App / Content provisioners to find a way around them before releasing to the market. No?

Chris -- my handset is UK unlocked and like a ton of other people (judging from the Nokia forums), I'm told, when I run the software update on my computer, that my handset is 'up to date'. Which it absolutely isn't.

I understand, again from piecing bits and pieces together from the Nokia forums, that this is because there's been no UK specific update made. Suffice to say that this tallies with my experience!

Sorry to hear your mobile can’t run Truphone at present.

If it’s a UK E61 and not an operator variant, you should be able to upgrade the firmware at http://www.nokia.co.uk/softwareupdate/ . Some users have reported that the Nokia software update doesn’t work with their GSM operator-locked phones. (If you’re trying this, you will need your USB cable, and you must remember to set the profile to ‘General’ before you start and ensure that there is a SIM card in place.)
