$67 billion text revenues by 2012?

Link: SiliconRepublic.com: SMS revenues to reach US$67bn

SMS continues to be the star of the data services show with traffic volumes and revenues continuing to confound predications, new research claims. But the medium faces the threats of cannibalisation of its revenues as well as the onset of mobile instant messaging (MIM).

However, although the growth of SMS revenues will not be as aggressive as the growth of SMS volumes due to declining prices, by 2012 global SMS revenues are expected to reach US$67bn, driven by 3.7 trillion messages.

I wonder, I really do.

Will some UK operators still be able to charge £0.125 per text message in 2012? I am not sure. Based on how things have been going so far, quite possibly. However, as more and more devices are released into the hands of normobs with instant messaging capabilities, I wonder if the UK revenue will decrease substantially?

I am using Agile Messenger like no tomorrow at the moment. It’s fantastic. Whenever I’m away from my desktop I try and keep it on. Rarely am I getting text messages as a result.

If your new Nokia comes complete with Yahoo! Go on it, what will it take for you to start using that regularly? Well, obviously, you need your friend(s) to have similar facilities, otherwise text still reigns supreme.

Hmm.

2012? 67 billion dollars? We shall see.

  1. Instant messaging is the future.
I have a Three x-series n73 and it great. Most of my messaging is done via a website with a chat page but I use msn too as a lot of friends are on it.

However Ifind the msn client that comes with three to be not so good. It’s a bit painful to use and if you “minimise” it it claims it will notifiy if new messages come in and indeed appears to do so – but they are never there, they seem to just be lost. Also it closes without notice quite often.

My question is, is agile messenger likely to work better? And will the data usage be free on three x-series… I’m assuming so?
