Developing a desire for a candybar handset

I don’t know what’s come over me.

I really feel like using a real phone.

A phone’s phone. You know, a real, candybar style phone.

I still very much like my E61…. just, I dunno… I’ve been eyeing my N73 and thinking, maybe, just maybe, I should convert to using that as my main handset…

But then, I can’t tell you how exciting it is, from a TOTALLY geeky perspective, to walk along the river by the Notre Dame with nothing by the E61 in my pocket, knowing that I can call, text, or email right there, right now. I really like that ‘connected potential’ feeling.

I can query my 1.8gig email folders immediately, from anywhere. I can knock up a google map and find out where I am, and even see a satellite image of my location, there and then. Or I can make a phone call ;-)

I can’t quite take a picture yet, though.

For that, I need to carry my N93.

Still, I’m thinking candybar handset…………… I don’t want to carry two phones though. I need my email with me as well. Arse.

Any suggestions?

    So you want an N95?

The problem is that even if you satisfy your desire for a photo and email capable phone, at some point you will will hit the wall again. Its likely to happen when you realise you can really get the 100% media-rich Web2.0 experience on your handset. Google reader, Meebo, Google Earth perhaps and unfortunately, mobile phones just arent capable of delivering it. S60 browser i getting close but there are physical problems you just cant overcome. SCreen sie/res is one. You need min 4″ and 800×480 to browse the ‘real’ internet. Keyboard is the other. You need a decent keyboard too. You might even hit the problem of screen sie for videos. Holding a mobile phone 6″ from your eyes is a pain in the arse for more than 5 mins.

    Convergence is not possible.

This is why we might see people starting to own 2 devices. A simple candybar phone for ease of use and as something to act as the modem for the 2nd device – a UMPC. Its the only device that allows you to move into seriously rich internet useage. And no, its not pocketable and probably never will be until rollable touchscreens are invented.

P.S. I pick up my E65 next week. Im sticking with the candybar + UMPC experience. I carry a bag with me anyway so another 700gm doesnt hurt!

oops correction in that last post.

‘can really get the 100%’ should read
    ‘can’t get the 100%’

smartphones cant give you full internet capabilty.

hang on, isn’t this what I was saying last week too!!! Yes, hoorah, it isn’t just me retreating back into a world where a phone is a phone (and it works – my treo lost my doctor’s phone number today!!).

That’s it, now I know I’m not the only one I’m doin’ it – candy bar store here we come… “hi mister candy bar store man, can I have a quarter of shine’s please”.

You can’t go wrong with the N73 – amazing pics and highly capable. You can’t probably get Good on it, but you can install Mailforexchange… OR you can get the E61i which will just get you the camera in a device you already like.
