The original article was a bit of fun but the depth of what this story is really about is very deep. Ever since email hit the high streets we have all being using the wrong medium for just about every type of communication we make. Email, sms, instant messenging are all absolutely wonderful if used for the right thing. And yes occasionally things like sms for a bit of the old flirting are a lot of fun.

But people are losing the ability to write long hand, to put down feelings and articulate beliefs in a letter; And as for speaking to each other face to face!!!? How often do we all think, ooh I'm not sure I want to speak to that unhappy client, I'll just send a quick email because I can hide behind the screen when his reply comes back. And how many of us sit in a room with colleagues and have an email conversation backwards and forwards with them? How stupid is that when you sit back and think about it!?

The speed at which we are losing these abilities is very scary. I would love to think that school teachers are educating kids to know when each medium is appropriate but I just don't see it happening some how.

It's definitely about time we all remembered how to look each other in the eyes again and start talking. Or sit down for an hour with pen and paper, some good coffee in the pot and pleasant music in the background and take our time over a letter that we know isn't going to get read for 2 days and that we won't get a reply back on for almost a week. Lets slow life down a little bit because right now we are all in danger of disappearing up our own smtp ports and becoming pixels in our own sms inboxes.

PS, Ewan, the letter is in the post... ;-)
