It's intersting from the upcoming (for Russia at least) 3G standpoint of view. I think due to 3G networks have the "high affinity" to data services the focus will be moved to the smthng like "SMS over IP". The Hotxt for example is the right solution for this case. And in this case will be no question like "choice of SMSC" :)

For the sake of example, lets say the transport fee is 0.5p, and the interworking fee for terminating a text on a French network is 4p. You could sell that for 8p and still make a tidy profit, and gain some interest from a customer who pays 24p to send a text to the same desination.

Not sure how well it would work for the UK, especially with the amount of bundled text deals available from the networks. Unless the third party was in a position to first negotiate access to the UK networks at the same termination price that they pay each other (3p), and then balance up inbound and outbound for each network to minimise the surplus termination owed, IMHO it's unlikely they'd get much of a market and still make money.

bit pointless then given the baseline for SMS charging isn't the originating SMSC, but rather the terminating network.

Actually the cost would probably go up because then the originating network would charge a transport fee to the SMSC owner.

Yes and no.. I think what the author of the article wants is the ability for consumers to be able to change the SMSC on their handset to use a third party - sort of like carrier preselect on BT landlines.

Doesn't this already exist? Isn't that what applications a bit like Hotxt do? (not specifically hotxt, because that's just client to client IM. But Skype's SMS service, for example.

And all those "500 SMS for £1.50" services on the internet?
