Carphone Warehouse salesman, Paul Potts, wins Britain’s Got Talent

Did you catch it last night?

Just in case you didn’t, here’s the chap who won — Paul Potts, a Carphone Warehouse salesman who’s also pretty good at Opera singing. Good on you, Paul!

Fantastic! I wanted him to win! However, it is worth noting that before he was a phone salesman he had many opera lessons, has had training for the pav man himself and is by no means just a “shower singer” that happened to turn up at the auditions.

He has been working towards this his whole life. The phone thing was just to get some cash in to cover the cost of the lessons really :)

Well done to him, but it’s nice to have this in context :)

Yay! Paul…btw, he didn’t actually “train” w/ Pavarotti. He was in a workshop that he paid for himself, and sang for Pavarotti. And of course he had training – no one wakes up & decides to start singing Italian opera. I’m a musician who has friends who have gone the same route – paying for lessons, paying for workshops, a little semi-pro work [that means they might pay for your room, meals & gas]. It’s a hard field to break into professionally.

As I’m sure Paul is aware, his voice & technique are still in process & there are others like him who do sing as well. His story, though, is just priceless and a tremendous inspiration. To have the courage to pursue your dreams, no matter how things look, and actually triumph after some really rough times…. It restores your faith. GO PAUL!

I ‘ve watched it over and over. I also trained in Opera – but it was not my favorite. I love to sing though. I continue to sing every chance I get. I, too, suffer from “lack of self-confidence”, but have learned to brave it all as time goes by, and have been rewarded myself. I have watched this video over and over, and it makes me cry every time. It’s beautiful. Go Paul!
