I picked up on a comment that SMS Text News reader, James Whatley, contributed recently on the Super 3G post. He said he already had a 3.5g icon on his Nokia N95.

I asked him for a screenshot and he sent me this one double-quick. Look at that! A little mini 3.5g icon!

Hmm.

Mine doesn’t have that….

.. because I haven’t done the software update on the firmware. I’ll sort that out. You can get the software to upgrade your Nokia from here.

yip, I have it too. It was part of the new software upgrade when you have a HSDPA network

    FYI – it’s on Vodafone…

    ;)

Well, if the network supports that speed, the icon pops up. I checked that last night with my Vodafone Germany (HSDPA 3.5G) SIM card vs a ePlus Germany (UMTS, 3.G) SIM card and the icon pops up when a HSDPA connection is established.

And boy, what a speed! :-)

As JKE says, it’s not a software upgrade – if you have an HS(D)PA handset/card, it will display ’3.5G’ when in HS(D)PA service.

So your bog standard N95 should display 3.5G when in HSDPA coverage. Maybe Mr MacLeod is in the wild west of Hartlepool today? ;-)

The thing is with the N95 you need v12.0.013 (or above) firmware to actually see the icon..
I know I’ve had HSDPA for ages now – but this is the first time that the phone has actually alerted me to it.

FYI – The change log from v11 to v12 is here:

could anyone please tell me what program has been used for screenshot? and maybe, where could I get it?… I don’t have one that could do that and it annoys me. :( Thanks in advance

Yeah HSDPA is pretty fast but also very expensive if don’t have a flatrate ^^

The 3.5Icon onloy pops up, when you are downloading things. otherwise it shows 3G.

    Tested with Vodafone Germany

@Noah – email me at whatleydude at yahoo dot co dot uk and I’ll send you the sis file…

And the 3.5G happens when I upload and download and when I’m just online… browsing Jaiku for instance…
