I reckon the conversation went something like this:

O2: So we have a deal for the iPhone in the UK?
Apple: Yes. but one more thing...
O2: Oh?
Apple: Drop i-mode... it'll dilute our iBrand and confuse customers.
O2: But...
Apple: Have you seen the 3G iPhone prototype? *holds up a black box*
O2: i-mode is history.. now can I just get a...
Apple: No *leaves the room*

My son bought a Moto L7 (I think) with iMode about a year ago.

The handset was terrible. In fact Motorola couldn't help as it was different to the regular L7 firmware - UI written by the imode people I think (NEC).

The service itself was pricey and basic. Compare with "planet 3" - etc - no chance.

o2 are now serious laggards in the consumer mobile data market

T Mobile, 3 have reasonable priced 1Gb options
Even vodafone have something
O2 still insist on rip-off prices for 1Mb data

Interestingly my kids, and some of their friends (young teenagers) are on the cusp of deserting O2 because of this....
