SMS Forum: Mission Accomplished

Our work here is done!

So reckon the chaps at the industry body, SMS Forum.

Link: SMS Forum Discontinues Operation

The SMS Forum, a non-profit organization with a mission to develop, foster and promote SMS (short message service) to the benefit of the global wireless industry will disband by July 27, 2007, and take down its web site by the end of 2007

They quite rightly assert that with text messaging hitting maturity, there is no need to continue to foster/promote the medium.

In case you’re still a member…

Members in good standing are encouraged to login to the web site (http://www.smsforum.net), and download valuable tools such as the SMPP v5 protocol specification, the Mobile Message Application (MMAP) protocol specification and the SMPP client test tool, prior to the removal of the web address.

Everyone from SMS Forum…. take a bow!

Yes makes sense to disband this forum I suppose. SMS is so popular worldwide that everyone could just sit back and gloat! But success can lead to more success: The next stage for SMS is for operators to get more revenue from SMS in return for giving their customers new SMS applications and services which make their lifestyles even better and convenient eg making payments using SMS and mobiles; using SMS ads for cheaper bills; allowing business users more flexibility and control of SMS etc. So SMS might be more popular than David Beckham at the moment but there is loads more opportunity for operators and users who understand how it can really influence our lifestyles over many other data services.
