If you are currently holding the beauty that is the Apple iPhone in your palm, yet unable to properly use it, here is a solution.

iPhoneUnlocked.eu are preparing to release their unlock service. It was £45 but due to demand, they’ve reduced the fee to £39.95 per unlock. The first batch of unlock licenses are due to go live this afternoon — I hope to be one of the first.

You too can be one of the first to receive an unlock if you email them mentioning ‘SMS Text News’ — they’ll bump you up the license list to speed up the process for you. Drop an email to info at iphoneunlocked.eu if you’d like your device unlocked — be sure to include your IMEI number in the email.

    I’m cynical too. The way it reads, they are installing a patch which re-routes the phone’s DNS lookup, so when it goes to do network activation, instead of pointing at AT&T it points at these guys applications, where they’ve reverse engineered the unlock code. If thats right, then next time apple put out a software update it will break revert back to normal behavoiur.

    That’ the activation hack you’re describing… not the unlocking one which obviously needs to change something on the phone. Recognition of the SIM needs to happen without a network connection because (be definition) one is not available until the SIM is registered.

    I signed up to the list yesterday, and I also spoke to the guy running iPhoneunlocked.eu on the phone today.

    Unfortunately he’s transferred, presumably, a truckload of cash to the “company” that created the unlock (iphonesimfree.com) and hasn’t yet been able to offer the service.

    The iphonesimfree.com solution is basically built on the same idea (and, I believe, code) as the hardware (solder or needle method) but due to an undiscovered hole (literally, a hole) in the baseband firmware the iphonesimfree.com guys were able to perform the firmware upgrade without the hardware hack.

    Earlier this evening (about 9pm GMT) a bunch of people on an IRC channel (that I just happened to be on at the time) discovered the baseband hole and are currently knocking up a free unlock tool… I fully expect there to be a freely available unlock tool by the time we all wake up in the morning (although I’ll probably stay up for it).

    This is bad news for the iphonesimfree.com resellers (such as iphoneunlocked.eu) that have plonked down loads of cash for the licenses but have been unable to provide the service before the free solution was made available… but then surely everyone knew it’d be reverse engineered in a matter of hours?
