Can anyone help with a perspective on this issue?
Hi Ewan,
I’m a regular visitor of smstextnews and stumbled upon an article of yours where u mentioned about people coming up to you for any phone related queries and was wondering whether you could help me out with my own query.
I have a nokia e61i, and everything about the phone is wonderful….everything but a problem with the automatic network selection. It just so happens that every time i loose coverage, unlike other phones, it automatically doesn’t pick up my network. I’ve tried using the gsm mode but that doesn’t help. I doubt it could be a problem with the antenna as i usually get excellent network in most places.
Let me know if you’ve heard about something like this. I would really appreciate it.
Thanks a lot, Dhruv
Which network is this operating on and in what area?
Also, what is firmware version ( *#0000# )
I’d say that was a faulty handset. Mine has no problem with network selection. It handled speeding from London to Manchester on the train fine yesterday!
Martin’s last blog post..TIF Bid approaches new hurdles
Firmware version 1.0633.22.05
The network is Vodafone, Mumbai, India. I dunno if its a problem with the handset as it gets good reception in most areas. Its just that, at times when i loose reception, its shows 3g as the netwok (or nothing at other times) and i have to restart the phone to correct this.
I was planning on upgrading the firmware but i read somewhere that the E61i firmware upgrade is known to slow down the phone :-/
Update!!
Turns out that i was too impatient with the phone!
A few days back, i was in an elevator and i lost signal. When i got out i stared at my screen and noticed that the network had changed to 3g. Since there’s no 3g in India, it changed back to gsm after a few seconds. I then realised that i had just been a ittle impatient with the phone earlier on, where in a similar situation i promptly re-booted the phone.
Thanks for all you time though 🙂
Ps: Is a firmware upgrade really required for the e61i? If yes, then what are the benefits?
Hey,
A friend of mine owns a nokia E51, and guess what he tells me today at the office….he reported the same problem that i was facing with my e61i!! He even tried changing the sim card to see whether it was a sim related error but no dice. I would appreciate it if someone could figure out the problem here.
My guess is that it has something to do with the dual network, but then I’m no expert :/
Oh, and i forgot to add…in his case he HAS to reboot the phone to fix the problem. I’ve asked him to wait a while before rebooting but he told me he had already tried that several times and it didn’t work at all.
Same here its awful that a phone can be advertised as Dual GSM but fails to let the user choose which network to join.
Very expensive if you go abroad!
