UK Sucks. I am British by the way

I'm guessing that many, if not most, of your time on the phone(s) is spent talking with other supermobs[c], mobile marketing specialists, industry leaders, phone techies and the like.

So how come they're not using Skype?
Truphone? Fring?
Or even better, the native voip client on their phones?
Seriously, what's their excuse? I really want to know!

And I'm sure you'd replace some calls with IM chats if only people had a client running more frequently.

@Terence - It would make my day if Vodafone unleashed an X-Series lookalike - Anything less is a bit of an anticlimax now. It's great that V is heading in the right direction. They just need to keep moving forward! :)
Thanks for your comments here, btw. They're always informative, usually interesting. And you're no schill!

From your rant, the main impression I get is that you're more interested in network and call quality.

I'd suggest that you work out exactly how many minutes you *want* to use and find a priceplan with a higher limit than that. Or, create a fancy spreadsheet showing how the inclusive and out of bundle minutes stack up cost wise.

Voda (my employers, yes, I'm a schill) do 3,000mins and unlimited texts at the top tariff. True, the out of bundle minutes can be pricey but - do you honesty spend more than 2 hours on the phone each and every day?
Either way, at £75 pcm it's more minutes and texts than any of our rivals.

The other thing to look at, is a small business tariff. Find a salesman towards the end of the month who wants his commission and get a multi-phone deal with a huge number of minutes which can be used by any phone.

As for the Vodafone data charges.... Wait and see :-)

Here's a thought: why not decide to use one operator, and change every three months. The number porting service isn't a drama, you should be out of touch for maybe an hour max while to porting occurs (I've done it several times and it's been seamless for me).

That way you get to experience/suffer/enjoy every network within an 18 month period. You'll deeply understand the account setup/porting/billing/leaving process, that the industry expects millions to go through every year. Lots of bloggage in there. 3 months should be long enough to experience/comment on the various approaches to roaming too - 3 like Home, VF passport, etc. as well as coverage, speed etc.

Maybe come up with a common template to score each operator against, e.g.

Time/ease of account setup (including payment setup ;-))
Porting experience
Data & Voice experience
Billing experience
exit experience

Only downside I can see is signing up to a package. Maybe go with a SIM-only pay monthly package. Assuming all MNO's do such a thing?

£0.02.

Cheers

I also rate 3. Unlimited mobile data (X-Series Silver) for £5. Good value bundles. I just renewed my contract & they reduced the monthly charge from £25 to £17 plus threw in a handset. Maybe not the best coverage but overall the best value for me.

Ewan,
Pat Phelan was telling me during MWC that in 60 days they would have data turned on. Plus they are getting rid of the 2 number set up, no more number to call and number to sms. It will just be your 1 number.

This piece was all over the shop!

At least in the UK, you have some proper GSM choices. Here, you're looking at AT&T or T-Moble (in most areas). I just can't bring myself to purchase a CDMA handset.

3 - the "thinking" network.

Internet: Good speeds, £5/mo, as a heavy and varied user I've never experienced any port blocking.

International: If you're on their network in another country you can use all your free minutes, and data allowance as usual. Not sure about non inclusive...

It goes to show that there are some brains up there, and that hopefully more good ideas will come!

I've done the "all round the shop" thing, pretending to myself that money wasn't an issue. Somehow, I still felt most comfortable that I'll be able to "do stuff" and keep up with the latest phone things with 3. They're tech friendly. (And possibly not so normob friendly!)

I wish I could say I wasn't with them, so I'd seem more objective...
