Supply vs demand, pure and simple.

Ewan has a demand for interesting mobile industry stories. There are plenty out there.

The industry values Ewan’s time and demands it, but there’s only one of him.

What previously was free is now scarce. Economics 101 dictates that a price has to be placed upon it, or the tradgedy of the commons occurs – in this case, Ewan being barraged by hundreds of requests, and doing them all badly due to lack of time.

I prefer to keep the quality up. Bring in Ben, James, Julia et al to help feed our insatiable hourly fix, (maybe sub them out for $100/hr. Back in the interview cage, Whatley ) but for god’s sake keep the Scot fed, watered and sharp.

@Grant: I disagree. The blog is free, the unlimited drinks are free etc etc. But if you want some consultancy you need to pay for it. Especially when demand far outstrips supply. The price isn’t prohibitive if a firm believes their business will benefit and if it’s a just a casual chat that’s needed, there’s probably a better (and free-er) time(!)

I am a contributor to the site, so I guess you’d expect me to say that, but as a consultant by day if does upset me when people want my ‘product’ for free.
