The iPhone 3G failure to launch continues!

Remember that iPhone 3G I queued for? Yup, that’s it up there. Notice something about it? That’s right, O2 still haven’t activated the SIM!

I’m not some incredibly unlucky iPhone purchaser, this is NORMAL! The O2 customer forums are awash with people who either queued over the weekend or who pre-ordered through Carphone Warehouse and recieved their handsets on Friday only to find that four days later O2 still haven’t activated their SIM.

As Ewan would say, what a bunch of chumps; but who are the biggest chumps, O2 for cocking it up in the first place or me, the customer, for accepting it?

  1. ……Or the fool who puts up with 'Select Access Point' for oh, I dunno, his entire working life?

    (fish/barrel, that one 😉 )

  2. Sorry – that last sentence should've been bookended with:

    “You will be…”

    and

“…as soon as your sorry operator pulls their finger out and activates your 'amazing' phone.”

  3. Ladies, ladies…manbags at dawn, perhaps?

Q: if you had to design a test, to – in theory – benchmark the non-voice/text mobile user experience of various devices, what would it be?

(I'm leaving out voice/text as they are sorted, common denominator, etc, and really so last decade. No, don't discuss)

    So, here's a Non-Voice/Text (NVT – I got me a new acronym! w00t!) starter for 10: Say, oh, a bog-standard, out-of-the-box-no-special-apps-installed N95 GB and an i3G….

Both devices on the table, turned on. Not allowed to use Texperts / 118-118 etc. Pick two members of the public who have been mobile users for some time. Start the clock ticking…..

Maybe repeat with some more people. Maybe swap devices a month later and re-run. Collate the results.

    Anyone up for this?

  4. Well, I don't have an i3G and I've never used one (nor the 2g), I'm an N95 8GB kind of guy with a heavily used data plan, BUT I have a horrible feeling I know who'd be the winner – and that makes me sad 🙁

  5. I had the same problem.. I was first in line friday morning outside o2, had to sign up the old fahsioned way (pen and paper). I'm not even sure if they actually did a credit check in the end.. Anyway, out of the store and using wifi by 8:30am and I didn't have 3G access till Sunday 10am… 🙁 But it came eventually, and I'm happy. I suppose being a total sucker to consumerism and being first inline, and getting the phone in my hands straight away, now it's working, I kinda forgive O2 for not getting their lives together like at&t did for their launch… (At least their staff knew how to use the iPhone…)

  6. If you like, I'm not fussed…

Happy to waste more time on this site talking up the iPhone if you think it deserves more column inches.

I couldn't care less… I find the iPhone LAUNCH a complete and utter failure.
    Not the iPhone.

You make a good point about the Access Point Settings. I shall remember that deal-breaker next time I'm selecting a new device…

    *sigh*

  7. Just because the launch was a complete T5, doesn't mean the device is too. Baby/bathwater etc.

…re APS, I think that sort of stuff isn't a deal-breaker at the time of purchase, because phones aren't chosen by most based on the niceties of the UI. But long-term useage is. And that's what MNO's want to drive, so silly, utterly useless messages that just confuse and obfuscate should be hunted down and ruthlessly told to go away.

  8. “Just because the launch was a complete T5, doesn't mean the device is too. Baby/bathwater etc.”

Yeah – I think I covered that when I said:

“I find the iPhone LAUNCH a complete and utter failure.
    Not the iPhone. “

But hey, you don't have to read all of my replies.
    It just helps.

Re: APS – This is made redundant in new handsets. The N78 APPARENTLY has this sorted out… I am yet to test it myself so don't quote me/use it as further ammo.

    Cheers.
