If you're using “Contract WAP” as your access point, there shouldn't be any lossy compression.
To verify, live -> web -> web preferences.
There you can switch transcoding on or off. Even if it's on, you get a choice of high, medium, low compression – or no images.

Just tried it on my N95 8GB and I don't see any compression.

For one unknown reason my o2 default web settings was actually O2 PostPay GPRS, which is wap. After many calls to o2 requesting proper web settings I got fed up with them sending these same settings all the time. With wap not many applications worked, SEVEN did not work with wap, I changed these settings to proper O2 mobile web

However, I just used kcjh's tip and my phone does not connect to the web at all. Yep, but I have one of those we-do-not-speak-of smartphones

On the datacard software there is an option to reduce the compression, I think. You can selectively load images uncompressed by clicking SHIFT+F5 (I think. The alt-text of the image will tell you).

The only way I've found round it is
a) Use HTTPS where possible
b) Use a VPN

Confirmed on my o2 N78.

(does anyone have a similar solution for Vodafone?!)
