Mobile Industry Review Show – Episode 17 from Covent Garden

Dan Lane, Ben Smith and James Whatley are back! This week we took the video podcast to Covent Garden — Central London’s haven for tourists.

It’s a very special video this week — we tried out the SIMable ‘sim unlocking solution’ for handsets on a Nokia N95… and it worked. Then we tried it on an Apple iPhone 3G…. and it worked. An EXCLUSIVE! All on camera for your viewing pleasure. £16 of pure joy, that SIMable. I’ve just ordered one myself.

We were joined by a special guest in the form of Josh Russell — entrepreneur, founder, WiMax specialist and new Tuttle Brighton social media cafe host.

We pull take a look at Duracell’s new mobile phone (and iPhone/iPod) Pocket Charger — thanks Duracell, it’s good to see them bringing their might to this market.

James takes a walk about Covent Garden and checks out the phones in use by the tourists and young things. There are plenty of annoyed CDMA-sporting tourists without their cell phones — and even one Canadian couple (we really felt for them).

And — we had so much feedback from the previous two videos about the bloopers (you really liked them) so we’ve kept them in this week. You must, must, must watch — I kid ye not, James Whatley was ‘spotted’ by some Italian girl who thought he was a famous singer. She proceeded to demand an autograph and photo. No shrinking violet, our very own Superstar Whatley was happy to oblige. Must-see TV.

Here, then, is the high quality video:

Enjoyed this, esp James' advice to the guy with old firmware. Is the video podcast going to be available via iTunes?

Yes! Coming this week along with a general tidy-up of our podcast feeds.

    Kip,

Not actually had the chance to watch the edit yet, but filming got cut short due to weather this week so we didn't get to shoot that section. However, we haven't forgotten about any of the requests and they'll all be in next week's edition which will be a Brighton Tuttle, beach and donkey-rides special.

    Sorry!

    Ben

Mate, I always do this but I’m typing this while I’m watching. We’ve got millions of things like those Duracell chargers and they are EVERYWHERE here (in Japan) because pretty much all the phones on a given network use one of two chargers.
Well done for reminding me that this is a Japan thing.

It really does improve massively each week! Whatley does have a slighty 'David Brent-esqe' way about him :) . A small editing thought is after the voice over says each name, cut to a small outtake / soundbite / snippet from each person, and also with the location shots at the start – have each clip last less time, will make it a little more interesting.

Kip the wannabe director strikes again!

That femtocell segment was awful! Those annoying kids were distracting me!

Just watched the 3GP version on the train – genius. Really good, perfectly do-able even on a wee screen at low res.

Know any Java podcast manager-type apps out there for the normobs among us? Not everyone's got an iPhone or N95, you know….

Failing Java, BREW would do nicely ;-)

  • Mike42

Can you do one on WiMax? I wanna see me some smoke & mirrors!

  • http://www.smstextnews.com smstextnews

I think 3 offer one, Mike?

  • Mike42

    I've got Mobilcast running, but…jeeez…..it's a pig.

In order to 'Save for later' I have to click lots, the podcast then gets dumped in among all my music tracks, with no info allowing to be found by genre or artist.

Plus the Melodeo app can't automatically check like Nokia Podcast Manager does.

Too hard for me, waaaaay too hard for normobs.

    Anyone got any other ideas?

hah. these videos are brilliant. Entertainining and informative. One thing though. Please get rid of the strange voice which precedes and ends the vidcast.

Great work. Look forward to the next one

The strange voice? ;-) That's our mockumentary genius sweeper/trailer guy!

Simable does not work with Sunrise, Switzerland. Phone is not reachable, SMS do not work correctly, no 3G data.

Has anyone jailbroken their iPhone, unlocked it with yellowsn0w and are using a Three sim.

I've done this it seemed to go Ok… I'm getting a full 3G signal. However, I can't browse the web despite entering three.co.uk as my APN.

Has anyone got any ideas, or is Simable my only option for Three?

    Cheers.
