N95 8GB: Phone start-up failed. Contact the retailer.

Ah dear. I dug out my N95 8GB the other day and charged it up. I was going to try and use the device more – as a camera (because if you recall it arrived from T-Mobile UK without data functioning). Well. I can’t use it. Not at the moment. I’ve never seen this message on a Nokia before:

“Phone start-up failed. Contact the retailer.”

Any suggestions on how to get it to work?

Turn the phone off. Hold the red button while turning it back on, or keep pressing the red button, can't remember which. When the phone turns on switch off active standby, this is normally the cause of this issue. You might want to do a factory reset, press *#7370#. Happened to me when I changed the product code on my N95-1 then did a restore with the nokia pc suite.
  • Erm...

Either do a hard reset - or stick it on Nokia Software Updater and reinstall the firmware.

Hold *, 3 & Green Handset buttons whole turning on. It will completely wipe the phone, but should get it working again.
  • And if that doesn't work, take it into one of those dodgy unlock shops and get the firmware properly flashed. Worked fine for me when my N95 refused to boot, and only took 20 minutes!

    Hey,
Have you tried the hard reset using (Green) + "*" + "3"+ Power ?
  • What Ric said.

Bring it with you tomorrow and I'll take a look if you like.

    I'll bring it..
  • Fixed. ;)
  • I've had the same message a few times when I've gone to take photos. Usually, for me, he keeps on working. If not, 'the battery remove' trick does the, er, trick.

Actually, it's funny that I had that message when my N73 was overloaded with apps, including Psiloc's IRRemote (which installs a memory hungry DRM utility). If I entered the PIN and confirmed in less than 30 seconds, I'd get that message. The longer I'd wait, the more it'd load before it, if I waited 30 seconds, then it would normally start. I fixed it after formatting the entire phone and ditching the dreaded IRRemote.

For the benefit of future people googling. I had this problem after I upgraded firmware and restored a backup. Never restore settings between firmwares!!!!!

Anyway the 3 + * + pickup didn't work when I did it. I left the phone on and 6 hours later I received a call on it. After that call, teh 3 + * + green pickup worked!!!!
