I have had a similar experience. My 18 month contract with orange (which I signed up to for the free PS3) is due to end next month and last month Orange cold called me. When i explained that i was waiting for the probable release of the 2009 iphone and would be leaving at that time they offered me a sony ericsson phone and a cheque for 300 pounds to buy an iphone. When asked about lack of updates and support he avoided the question...

Except that since then Orange have withdrawn the Bold (for a bit) because of performance issues... something that we only learnt about over time and longer-term use of the Bold.

That's a very defensive comment Ladyboy69. The 'Some Expert' is, of course, me.

The Bold does give the iPhone a run for it's money. But that's it. Just a run. The Bold comes out sweating profusely whilst the iPhone doesn't even break a sweat in terms of multimedia internet data and application services.

Meanwhile, the fact that Orange even offered reader Josh a loan... a LOAN to buy an iPhone? Desperate, ridiculous -- and a brilliant sign of the times.

Ewan, regarding your comment "there ain’t nothing that any of those handsets can do — at all — to compete" ('So, you’ve seen the iPhone… But, have you seen the competition?')... I seem to remember some expert from this site saying "The Bold certainly gives the iPhone a run for it’s money in my book" (September 16 in related post links on this page). I suppose I'll have to remember not to put much weight on his opinions in the future...

One of the big problems with Orange is the Orange branding software they cripple their leading handset offerings with. For years I've seen postings on Nokia (for example) forums about how the Orange branded "extras" they stick on S60 based handsets leads to HUGE performance problems (to the extent of customers returning phones because they think the phone is too crap and slow), bugs, and missing features. I recently had the unpleasant and tedious experience of debranding an N82 from this crap.

It really is appalling and whoever is in charge of the branding at Orange should sack the total idiots responsible for the crapware they infest their handsets with. I would genuinely rather buy a phone with several viruses running rampant on it, than one with Orange branding, the former would be easier and cheaper to clean up.

Orange offering you a loan is a little crazy i must admit!

However, with regards to operators giving us more incentive to stay, some companies are actually quite good! So, when my old t-mobile contract ended a few months ago, it was a pretty even split between the G1 and the iPhone. I ended up getting the G1 because t-mobile offered me an amazing deal as my old contract ended. £10 for the handset, £20/m unlimited data... So yeah, knowing loyalty counts for something totally made me stay with t-mobile :-)
