If you go to an average pub in an average bigger european city, you'll find (say) 50 people there. Out of those 50, 4 will have iPhones, 20 will have some kind of a nokia smartphonish phone. So far so good – from this you're driving a conclusion that Nokia market for developers is X times bigger than AppStore market.

But:

If you ask those 4 iPhone guys if they spent any money in AppStore:
* 3 will tell you that yes, they did. And they're planning to spend more.
* 1 will tell you that no, but he's thinking about it.

If you ask those 20 nokia guys if they spent any money on mobile software:
* 10 will look at you in confusion.
* 5 will tell you that they bought some operator-driven content (ringtones?) but now they're done.
* 4 will say they'll never spend any money on mobile software and they think it's stupid.
* 1 will say that yes, he wanted badly to buy this Ovi app but it wasn't available for his nokia phone.

I'm one of those wierdos who as long as the small matter of paying my bills is covered, loves developing software to benefit people – literally as many people as possible, instead of developing to satisfy some insatiable desire for more and more money and material possessions.

The iPhone with it's probably eternal 0.1% global market share of all handsets is as irrelevant to me as it is to the other 99.9% of mobile users in the world. Honestly if a tiny subset of 1st-world developers and media want to get this excited about a handset with 0.1% market share? They're welcome to it, and good luck!

Me? I'll put my efforts into developing where it really matters, where it can really potentially make a difference.
