I just signed up for an o2 Money prepay debit card

I walked by the o2 shop in Chiswick last week and saw they’d changed their posters.

Both shop windows are now covered in o2 Money branding.

Fascinating stuff.

It appears to be like any other prepay debit card arrangement out there. Load money on to it and use it as much as you like. Only, it’s o2 branded. You do get updates and alerts through your mobile for every transaction though.

That said I thought I might as well put my money where my keyboard is. So I signed up last night.

I’ll let you know how I get on.

If you’re an o2 customer, you can apply for your own debit card here:

Ewan isn't it a prepay card rather than a debit card?

It is a prepay card, that can be used anywhere Visa is accepted – the upside is that with the cash manager card you get notified via SMS immediately when its used – something that happens with every card transaction if you have a South African Debit / Credit card, this helps with fraud prevention, you know instantly if someone has cloned your card and is using it. Not sure why the banks here haven't implemented in on a bigger scale, its not that hard to do! Like all things mobile, UK banks are a million years behind the rest of the world, which is a shame as there are a some excellent Mobile Banking technology companies in the UK who seem to spend most of their time talking to banks in other countries!

On he O2 front, I tried to apply for one on launch last week and the web site failed completely part way through signing up, tried a couple of times then gave up. Maybe it was the rush of people clammering to sign up

Sorry you're entirely right, prepay … not debit

It's not quite like all the other cards though – there's no fees for using or adding money to them, apart from when you use cash machines that charge everyone fees.

It says you can top up using a debit card, why would anyone want one of these if they already have a proper debit card?.

So that you can separate your disposable income from bills perhaps?
Think of it as exactly what it is- a cash manager.
When you get paid, put any spare money on the card, and know that you cannot overspend or get charged.
    Fantastic idea.
