Do other operators want this business? I think that there is an assumption that operators *must* be falling over themselves to get iPhone business, but is that true?

Do operators want customers who

1. Moan as soon as the data network has a hiccough?
2. Will want unlimited data cheaper than o2?
3. Will be very heavy data users?
4. Want to cut the MNO out of the content loop?
5. Will prolly want to move to pre-pay?
6. Will hack their phone to move to another network, and then complain when the settings are incorrect?

I'm not necessarily thinking of Ewan's readers, more normobs.

I don't necessarily think that having iPhones on the network is desirable for some operators. For some, it could stretch their data network; for others it could stretch their customer services dealing with queries and complaints. For all of them, it will be high-cost/low-income business.

I have a Pay as you go iPhone which will stay on O2 due to the free data but my contract sim of many yrs is moving to Vodafone. I've had enough of slow unreliable data and poor signal pick up.

I have been a customer of Vodafone both personally and corporately for the best part of 15 years, I migrated off Vodafone's network 6 weeks ago to O2 so that I could get the 3GS iPhone, in that time I have had more downtime than during all the years I was with Vodafone – so I would most definitely revert back to Voda given the choice.

I worked for a large corporate for a number of years in network management, my team were responsible for updating our FTSE 100 customers on the availability of the networks they had outsourced to us, if any one of our networks had experienced regular weekly outages of 3 to 10 hours then all hell would have broken loose, peoples jobs would be on the line and action plans put in place very quickly to make sure the issue didn't re-occur.

What I find appaling from O2 is that they don't seem to have any mechanism in place to let users know there is an outage, and I haven't even started down the route of trying to get credits back for poor service, part of me doesn't even want to bother calling them because I know what a long and tedious process it will be. It's not what Johan Nordsrom would have called good customer service

No way I will be sticking with o2. Each week there is around 3-10 hours of data downtime. When you are reliant on emails or networking this is not helpful. I could live with it a bit more if they explained the issue sooner, updated more often as it was being resolved, then provided information on what the problem was (not just PR spin). It has happened so many times that even a bit of compensation should be thought about if it happens yet again.

A search of recent tweets for "o2" will give you some idea. And articles on the register and now even @o2 will highlight some of the issues being seen.

I doubt I will wait until October, RedSn0w will be on tonight and the three sim will be plonked in. I will also hold off getting the 3GS until I can get an official one on another network.

Well *if* the rumours are correct, then O2 won't lose a great deal of existing customers until Jan 2010. That's when most people who upgraded from the original iPhone to the 3G, and who got pissed off when O2 failed to provide a decent upgrade path to the 3GS, will reach contract expiry.

So who to move to? Around Reading, I find 3 and Vodafone to have excellent coverage. They are also both data-friendly networks. Could we see tethering bundled in? O2 is going to have to work hard to keep existing iPhone customers, let alone get new ones.
