I see your point regarding the encouragement of use, but when you reach a certain age the delight of making rude noises, or viewing babes on exercise bikes via ones phone does tend to wain a little :)
And i'm still not certain that those types of Apps are what we should be aiming for, or encouraging :p

I don't agree Mark -- I think this kind of nonsense is absolutely 100% critical to the development of the industry. It's these silly things that really expand the average normob's mobile-comfort-zone. Most normobs playing with Gym Babes, or iFart, are absolutely obsessed with them. The reason iFart was so amazingly successful is because millions of people wanted to have their mobile phone be able to make fart noises.

Stupid, yes.

But try making your 1st generation LG Chocolate do that. It's *reeeeeeeelly* difficult. In fact I'm pretty sure it's totally impossible for a 21 year old standing in the centre of Leicester Square to make her LG Chocolate play a fart noise on demand. Unless she happens to have access to some bollocks ringtone service. That'd be the nearest she could manage. Although it's stupid, these kind of applications have built demand. They've also educated the normobs -- the new iPhone users -- and pushed them to discover how to download iFart... and then, once they're 'in', once they've downloaded their first app, they're then looking around at other possibilities.

The other side of things of course, are the likes of Facebook, MySpace and so on -- those are huge, huge 'gateway' applications that the normobs go for first.

Show any chap in the pub Gym Babes and he'll want it on his phone. That's the magic of this kind of application.

We need more and more of these little gimmicks to get people hooked, to educate them to think outside text messaging and telephoning, with the odd visit to 'the shitty mobile web'. The more the mobile audience can be educated, the more customers there are for the *real* life-changing applications out there, like, for example, the (more expensive) National Rail application that is hugely, hugely useful for me on a regular basis.

I think the guy who mentioned the Fart app kinda hit the nail on the head, that was the top seller for several months straight :).
These kinda fluff and nonsense stuff make wads for developers, and Apple, but dont really enhance or advance the mobile world per se, do they.
