Flying to NYC to pick up an iPad. Want one? [updated with costs, reality check]

I’m giving serious thought to flying to NYC this weekend to pick up an iPad. Whatever you think of the device, of Apple, of the fanboy attitudes, this is a device that is going to change the world. Or nail Apple to the wall. I think it’s probably the former.

That being said, there’s not much to be done here in the UK until it arrives at the end of the month. I’d like one now. As soon as possible. To evaluate, to examine, to experience. And in my case, to report.

Getting to NYC isn’t worth it for just one I don’t think. But for 5 units, or 10, it could be.

It’s the ultimate flight of fancy. Wholly unnecessary but also critical for many especially if it means a head start against the competition.

Could it be workable?

Assume a total unit cost of $499 each (for the cheapest unit).

Now assume 10% sales tax. $449.

Now assume the British Government will want 20% import tax. $538.80.

Now assume it’ll cost 1,500-2,000 pounds to get there and back, taxi from airport and whatnot. Assume worst case — 2k pounds = $3,056.

If I can get hold of 5 devices, the total cost will be $538.80 x 5 + 3,056 = $5,750. Divide by 5 = $1,150 or a total unit cost of £752 per device.

Or if I can some how get hold of 10 devices, $538.80x 10 + 3,056 = $8,436. Divide by 10 = $843.60 or a total unit cost of £552 per device.

Stupid idea?

Update: Yeah. Stupid idea. The costs are accurate. Indeed I think I could get them a lot cheaper. The biggest challenge is actually getting hold of the devices. I looked at talking to a distributor to block purchase 10 — the reality, however, is I’d need to get on a plane *first* then worry about the logistics. Which isn’t necessarily financially efficient. Arse.
