I just resurrected my Shure earphones from the rubble that is the ‘tech’ corner in the Mobile Industry Review office. I managed to find some replacement ear-muff-things (the plastic bits on the end) and tah dah, I am now able to use them.
But, the earphone marketplace has changed since I bought these back in, I don’t know, 2008. Therefore I’d welcome your recommendation on some good ones to buy. What do you use? And what do you use them with? I will primarily be using mine with an iPhone. Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless devicePosted via email from MIR Live
Yup… Shures for me too. Love’em.
Wasn’t keen on the in-ear foam tips, but having tried them they are the most comfortable and effective for ‘commuting’ use.
Ah nice!
Oh yes!
Ah you’re a foam guy then? Are they any good?

Shure SE530/535’s all-the-way! Oh and Terence, your ears are broken.
The best foams are the yellow ones that they don’t do any more.. I find the black stuff a bit too dense. Can still get the yellow on eBay though 🙂
Yes – much more comfortable than the rubbery plastic tips pictured. Credit to Dan Lane for the evangelism.
I’d do a gag about all my black ones eventually turning yellow, but that would be gross… so I wont.
I will say this. If you find that Shure headphones are comfortable in your ears then I wouldn’t bother looking anywhere else. Me, I am not so lucky. Daft shape ear’s I have. That means that after trying to live with countless different brands I keep coming back to Sony purely based on in-ear comfort. When I am out and about I use the multimedia remote that came with my N85 to which I attach, currently, some Sony MDR-AS100W. These are the latest from Sony that are of the same sort of type. Mainly they need to have a shortish cord so that when I clip my remote to my coat I do not need to loose lots of cable somewhere. Back when MP3 players were mostly of the USB pen-drive format popularised by Creative, getting headphones of that type was very easy. Nowadays, it is not so easy. But at least with these Sony ones I can drop the buds out of my ears when I need to and not worry about long cables going everywhere, making them very easy to use with heavy gloves on. They handle voice quality very well as well and are not too booming if the party on the other end is using some sort of speaker phone. They also let in just enough traffic noise to not be lethal either. I can also attest to the fact that they work well in some serious sub zero temperatures! But that they do not fit under helmets very well…
Most phones are pretty lousy at music anyway, if you attach a really good pair of headphones you’ll hear all sorts of hiss and popping.
Saying that I love my Klipsch Custom 1 earbuds and also my Plantronics Backbeat 906s (although they don’t have the tightest of fits).
But as several have said – if those Shures fit why change?
Shure are the dogs gonads so to speak, the foam buds are much more confortable, though you might not get such a tight fit (oh err missus).
I really didn’t think so many people loved the foam ones!
I use Motorola branded headphones for my Motorola mobile and Logitech headphones for my iPad. I would suggest you to always go with the top brands…
Sennheiser IE8s are supposed to be great and might be worth a look. I’ve tried them in a shop but haven’t had the budget yet to buy a pair.
I have been a big fan of the Sennheiser PX80’s but once I got the earphones with Nokia’s N8, I laid them to rest. Truly amazing.
