Checking out the PlayBook’s HDMI functionality

I took advantage of the rather big flatscreen in the hotel room to see just how the BlackBerry PlayBook worked via HDMI. See what you think:

  1. Nice, but I think I’m right in saying a Nokia N8 phone is superior as a media player – I’d be willing to bet (but haven’t checked) that it supports more video formats and codecs, and it also outputs full Dolby Surround Sound 5.1 (Playbook supports Dolby Mobile apparently). N8 has the advantage of being smaller and more portable, although a smaller screen is a disadvantage perhaps to someone after a tablet. I found watching a full length movie on the N8’s screen surprisingly not at all bad, even in the cramped and noisy confines of an aircraft, and battery life only dropped 10 – 20% from watching the whole 2 hour film. I wonder how the Playbook would compare?

  3. Forgot to add that I’m talking about the N8 in the context of using it’s HDMI output port – noting it also can output any visuals via the headphone socket to also plug into scart or RCA (composite) sockets on screens that lack HDMI, and can output full HD res UI (like the playbook).
