Our first phone call made under water – with the Sonim XP3

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

The second part of our Sonim XP3 coverage continues. In this episode, Ed Hodges takes the handset and totally submerges it.. and then proceeds to use it to try and make a call and send a text.

I wondered if this was possible.

Have a look to find out…

The ShoZu Master & Apprentice

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

In today’s show we bring you Mobile Industry Review reader Kip Hakes — a huge user of content gateway service, ShoZu — and his other half, Lorraine, who has never used the service, until today. Will she end the video a ShoZu convert?

If you’d like to tell us your ShoZu thoughts and experiences on camera, drop me a note to ewan@mobileindustryreview.com.  We usually film in London on Fridays.

Nokia’s Handset Test Laboratory in Farnborough

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Here we go!

I took an exclusive tour around the Nokia Handset Test Laboratory in Farnborough yesterday — see what you think. It really has given me a different viewpoint on (and a new-found respect for) Nokia handsets. I’ve always found them reliable and generally well-built, but when you take a look at the level of punishing tests they subject every revision of their handsets to, it really does demonstrate why they’re so well made.

(This is one of Nokia’s 11 handset test laboratories around the world).

I’ll be posting more shortly…

We’re Live from MoMo London

Here’s the live segment we filmed at MoMo London & Swedish Beers on Monday:

Why o2’s Bluebook wasn’t nominated in our awards

Friday, November 7th, 2008

We didn’t nominate o2’s Bluebook mobile address book backup service in our recent awards for a number of reasons. All discussed in this week’s 6th (and bonus) episode of the MIR Show:

(By the way, here’s Ben’s original review of the service.)

3G Video Calling Demonstration

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Since we published the 3G video calling demonstration segment back in the Week 39 show, we’ve had a ton of positive feedback.

So much so that we’ve put the segment into it’s own mini-show. It shows Dan Lane (using 3) video-calling James Whatley (using Vodafone) calling each other.

We were rather surprised at the positive feedback. We originally put the segment in because James couldn’t be with us and we wanted to have him in the show that week. We forgot that many of the international readers of Mobile Industry Review have never had the opportunity to try out video calling for one reason or another — mostly because 3G is, alas, still a pipe dream (no pun) for many operators.

So here it is:

We talk with Simon Ainslie, CEO of Nokia UK

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Simon Ainslie, CEO of Nokia UK answers our questions about their new Comes With Music service, launched here in London last week.

Here’s the streaming video:

Now, we’ve changed things around somewhat. Most weeks, we’re producing a MIR Show around 30 minutes — sometimes as long as 35 minutes. Whilst we’re getting tons of downloads (and views), thirty-five minutes is quite a commitment in terms of time and attention.

In particular I’ve been wanting to see how you all react to smaller vignette style features. I think these might be more accessible for a lot more of the wider audience who don’t necessarily want to sit down and watch the whole show.

There won’t be one big show this week. Instead, it’ll be split across the week — one per day. We’ll add them into the podcast streams as daily episodes too.

I can foresee this being slightly annoying for those of you used to a complete packaged ’show’, but I also like the fact that, for the first time, we’ll be able to publish our features on Youtube and other streaming video sites (that insist on <10 minute videos).

Please tell us what you think?

Mobile Industry Review Show – The G1 – Week 40

Monday, October 6th, 2008

This week, we’ve turned Google.

And courtesy of T-Mobile UK’s branding of their launch event, we’ve — generally — gone pink, too. Yes indeed, last week we were at T-Mobile’s Winter launch, checking out what’s coming for the all-important Christmas period.

The Nokia N96, the LG Renoir, the E71, one of the top Samsungs, as well as T-Mobile’s own USB Mobile Broadband WiFi Hub (that got Dan Lane very hot under the collar. Despite already having a WiFi router at home with USB broadband stick support, I think he wants one!)

Of course, the T-Mobile Google handset, the G1, manufactured by HTC, is the biggie. For that reason we’ve dedicated most of the show to that. Indeed, we bring you the entire walk-through by T-Mobile’s Richard W. Richard was the event’s assigned G1 expert and he showed us a lot of the device features — we’ve brought you that unedited and direct — almost 10 minutes of it.

What does Rafe Blandford of All About Symbian think of the G1? We bring you his view during the episode. (In fact we’ve got a supplemental show coming this week featuring Mr Blandford in more detail on the G1.)

T-Mobile UK’s Winter launch was also a good opportunity to do some normob (relatively) walk-abouts as we haven’t had the opportunity to do many of those recently. Dan Lane takes the camera — as is right and proper — and follows James Whatley on a tour around the room.

* James takes us on a quick introduction to the event ( 00:58 )

* Rafe Blandford on the G1 ( 02:08 )

* Normob Tour ( 04:00 )

* Ben Smith & Dan Lane walk around each stand at the event ( 08:12 )

* We talk to Will McInnes on his views representing T-Mobile and the new G1 ( 09:52 )

* Richard Warmsley of T-Mobile gives us the ‘official’ T-Mobile G1 walk-through (unedited) ( 12:47 )

* The MIR Show team give their view of the G1 ( 29:13 )

* An finally, we have Ben’s facts ( 33:01 )

A bumper show this week — 35:02 minutes.
