(Little bit of advertising here, sorry about that). We built http://lifeshow.com precisely for this use case. It allows you to push photos to different "connected screens", such as a Samsung telly, a cheap 3G android tablet, or a connected picture frame. The service is very simple on the picture viewing side, the pictures just come in, no manipulation required. You can even remotely switch photos, to comment the latest pics of your child while on the phone. Please give it a try!

How about a connected digital photo frame? I've no experience of them, but the ability for you to email photos to a specific address, and they appear on the device sounds like a solution. A quick google suggests there are even 3G ones around (not sure whether Ceiva is US only).

An example on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kodak-Pulse-Digital-Frame-Facebook/dp/B004TRGDXI/ref=pd_cp_ce_0

MMS really is a bit of a disaster... and i resent paying Big Red 37p per pic. and we dont do video messages anymore cos its 62p and the quality needs to be reduced to low quality to send it over the stupid network. me and my mates use whatsapp. great invention but again, theres a stupid 12mb limit on files we wanna share. it seems like no one has really thought about picture sharing. any other apps knocking about? it be good to know.

Terrible name for a great-looking phone with very promising specs, tho I'm a bit dismayed by the lack of camera details.

That said, I'm glad to see Panasonic joining the fray; increased competition only helps us consumers. Best of luck to 'em!

Excellent question. I think the best answer is, 'a bit of both.'

Far as I can tell, this number was generated through an independent analyst's work, not directly from itemized figures in the telcos' quarterly filings or guidance documents. In all likelihood, the author(s) collated some ex parte data -- taken from surveys, insider snooping and God-knows-where else -- they'd dug up, then used that to model the real world. And the point of all this jiggery-pokery was to tot up a 'loss' or 'gain' score.

Does that mean this report has no validity? Well, it's abundantly clear many users are switching to free SMS services. And here is the US, big SMS bundles are costly options for all but top-tier phone plans. So, it's reasonable to suggest the telcos are now losing, er, some amount of money...somewhere. But I think it's anyone's guess as to whether an analysts's exercise in creative maths bears any resemblance to actual revenues.

BBC's reportage here is among the better.: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-17111044

Aren't operators making money selling 'internet' (minutes, bundles, capacity whatever) that customers use for free social messaging. I don't think its as big a loss in under-developed market with less smartphone penetration where consumers are still evolving. Speaking of social media messaging, it is eating out the 'email' consumption as well!

Perhaps I'm showing how out-of-touch I am here, but I don't know many people who don't have (near enough) unlimited texts as part of their plan/prepay bundle.

And those who don't have (near enough) unlimited texts don't use the internet on their phones.

Is this an actual loss or a theoretical "if x number of whatsapp messages were texts messages instead we'd have made x. Therefore we have lost x."?

Well judging how receptive handset manufacturers have become to operator supported standards (ex: SIM based NFC), plus the continuous decrease of operator customizations of phones due to cost and customer opposition, plus the difficulty for operator to develop and rollout smartphones applications in a timely fashion, one has to wonder if operator will even be able to offer RCS services to all their users, let alone position them against OTT !

I agree. Billing by speed is one example that's already in-use. Billing by traffic-type might be another I suppose.

I'm definitely not suggesting the only answer is a 'free for all' - just that billing in units no-one understands or can predict isn't very consumer-friendly.

Like what? Bandwidth is a very limited resource and demand, it seems, far outstrips supply. A free for all just means that some may use their "unlimited" supply far beyond the point of utility they derive from it and in the process they reduce the quality of the service experienced by others who would get more utility from its use and who are thus willing to pay more for it.

Bloody brilliant. I would 100% be a frequent repeat customer if they did Ireland and will definitely try them whenever I am anywhere they operate (Turkey or USA most likely). Why the dearth of EU countries?

The pictures look fab. Love the waterproofness, that's very interesting. Will be well worth a look in the flesh I suspect. Hopefully it's quality and not tacky.

That is a neat use of mobile payment technology by starbucks. Thanks for the video demonstration. Other niche companies should consider StarBuck's example and go mobile with contactless transactions.

Ewan, I have to say the water proof for up to 30 minutes at 1 meter is an incredible perk. Ever since my toddler tossed my phone into a bucket of water 5 years ago the thought of water damage has scared me - you know, it goes into water and you are out $600. Yes, definitely this would cause me to take a very close look at this phone. It is almost like "free" insurance on the phone. Look, none of us believes it will be "us" that drops their phone in water, but we all know it is "possible". Nice add on!
