Sponge hits 48 in the Sunday Times Tech 100 league

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Good news for Sponge Group — the mobile marketing geniuses. The Sunday Times has ranked them at number 48 in it’s Microsoft Tech Track 100 league table.

Congratulations to CEO & Co-Founder, Alex Meisl and the team. Here’s a note from Alex:

“The growth Sponge has seen over the last two years has been immense, and gaining recognition as one of the Tech Track 100 is a great achievement,”

“Sponge has evolved into a company that not only supplies mobile technology but offers creative ideas to brands and media owners from Barclays Bank to Birds Eye and Vodafone. As mobile internet sites are becoming crucial to a wide range of businesses, we are already working with the likes of Auto Trader and Daily Star to allow them to provide valuable cross-platform services to their customers.”

In case you’re wondering, Sponge achieved a growth rate of 60% in 3 years to the end of 2007.

Drinks are on Alex.

The Planet Hosting: 100% rubbish, don’t bother

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

If you’re thinking of using The Planet for hosting of your dedicated servers, don’t bother. They’re not business critical.

I’ve been trying to update our credit card there for the last few days — and their system, which looks as though it’s being held together with string — won’t accept anything I give it.

But it’s efficient enough to switch one of the servers off because the other card is out of date.

Every time I update the card details, it tells me error. In fact I tried typing in ‘bollocks’ and it failed. The same as when I type in correct information.

Hardly mission critical.

Thankfully we’ve been using Mosso and they’ve been performing brilliantly for Mobile Industry Review. And their billing system works.

So to the CEO of The Planet, Doug Erwin, I say this: Your system is flakey and your policies and procedures flat out ridiculous. Switching off a customer when they’re trying to pay you is not good form. Please consider giving your front line support the ability to actually take my cash, rather than simply have to apologise and ask me to wait 30 minutes whilst they’ve been locked out of my account.

Ridiculous.

Don’t go near them if it’s business critical.
