DoCoMo kills off 2G

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Get out the black arm bands – it looks like rumours of the death of 2G really haven’t been exaggerated. Japanese giant NTT DoCoMo has announced its preparing to kill off its second generation network and will now officially stop taking subscriptions for its 2G mova service from this November.

And, as a sweetener for anyone thinking of ditching the mova service and switching to its 3G equivalent FOMA, DoCoMo has said it will waive the usual 2,100 yen fee for the upgrade.

There’s no official timeline on when mova will be officially turned off, with DoCoMo saying it will depend on when users make the transition. While the death of 2G is quite exciting in itself, what’s more interesting is what the company will do with the spectrum that gets freed up – potentially recycling it for new services like machine-to-machine communications or use it for boosting in-home wireless VoIP with femotcells.

Orange promises better network, more sales staff

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Orange has decided it’s time for a change and has announced a new strategy that it hopes will mean improvements in everything from its network to its sales staff.

Here’s the summary of what’s happening from Orange:

• new customer service strategy implemented including 500 new customer- facing roles in UK customer centres & shops; launching new contact options including IM, web and in-store service; stopping off-shore customer service expansion
• Retail expansion plans to reach 400 stores plus new on-line virtual shop
• new investment in 2G and 3G network quality and coverage
• new super-fast network to go live in 2009 offering speeds of up to 14.4mbps
• new “totally connected” product line – including laptops – to build on fixed & mobile broadband capabilities
• focus on stopping duplication which is likely to result in reduction of up to 450 roles

Being a network nerd, I’m particularly happy to see UK operators aiming to get speeds up to some of their international rivals (although it’s worth noting that there’s still a lack of handsets available that can cope with 14.4Mbps). I suspect, however, others will be more excited by the promised improvement in customer service.

Japan officially kills off the 2G phone

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

The end is nigh for 2G – in Japan at least. According to AFP, figures from the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association have revealed that during January, over four million mobiles were shipped in Japanese stores, but for the first time not a single one of those devices was a 2G model.

AFP also notes that Japan is second country to stop shipping 2G handsets after South Korea, with nearly 85 percent of Japanese users now sporting 3G mobiles. It puts North America and Western Europe in the shade at 50 and 10 percent respectively. Meanwhile, according to other reports suggest DoCoMo is stopping signing up users wanting 2G mova subscriptions.

I guess in Japan the death of 2G was always on the cards in the short term for Japan and it’s no great surprise either that South Korea has gone before it. Hands up if you think the iPhone will be 3G for its Asian launch…
