I was having a little poke around AdAge’s Top 10 Apple advertisements post and came cross this one for the iPhone’s FaceTime functionality.

Here’s the video embed:

I had to remind myself that this was an advertisement selling a piece of hardware (and a voice, text and data plan too).

I find it fascinating how the ad was able to focus almost 99% on the experience — the grandfather, his son, the new baby and nothing else.

There’s just an Apple and AT&T logo shown briefly at the end. They don’t even put a call to action, a domain name, a price or any tech specifications. Why do they need to bother?

Apple’s whole package — from design, to hardware to software and their collective obsession for the experience — led them to this point.

I’m looking forward to seeing what they cook up with the next generation of iPhones.. we should hopefully have news on that during the next few weeks.

In an effort to promote it’s Cybershot handset C905, Sony Ericsson is running an ad campaign claiming to be “an advertising media first”. The leading mobile phone manufacturing company, is promoting the mobile handset by teaming up with FHM magazine and running in-mag advertisements for the phone shot through the phone’s camera.

The company is making the camera the USP of the phone, highlighting that it is “so perfect, this whole page was shot on the mobile itself.” Apparently, C905 has the ability to reproduce high quality prints at any size.

Check out the advert on the Mobile Marketing Magazine.

IP giant and chipmaker Qualcomm has been reaching for its wallet, and has snapped up Irish ad targeting company Xiam Technologies for $32 million. According to Qualcomm, Xiam provides targeting and personalisation technology to make sure operators are delivering the right ads, offers and content to users based on their tastes by “using advanced profiling techniques”.

Qualcomm said it Xiam will act as a wholly owned subsidiary and continue selling its products as standalone offerings, although Qualcomm will also sell them alongside its other services.

With mobile advertising finally starting to get some take up, I reckon this area is going to see a lot more acquisitions going on as operators and tech companies try to find the best way to sell ads without annoying consumers.
