I got some news in from Jens Lauritzon, MD of Accumulate UK (that’s him above). I’m really, really liking the Accumulate concept. First, though, let’s have a bit of background…

Imagine the scene – you’re a 15 year old in Thailand on a PAYG deal and you’ve just got a new phone. You’ve been playing a game that you found on the device (i.e. it was pre-loaded) and you really like it so you want to buy it.

But first you need to find it, so off you go onto the portal or deck or club or whatever (remember, this isn’t an iPhone, so no App Store) and there are 10 games with a similar name. You might stop there, but you persevere. Then once you’ve found it you click to buy it and you don’t have enough credit.

By the time you’ve topped up you can’t be bothered with all the hassle and so you just play the free demo until you get bored of it.

That’s the scenario that happens all the time and the one that Accumulate is trying to change. And by changing create more revenues for everyone involved – operator, publisher, developer etc.

Accumulate’s Flexion wrapper provides consumers like our 15 year old a proper retail experience for mobile games and apps. In so doing it gives operators, device manufacturers, retailers and publishers the ability to maximise distribution, penetration and ARPU. Rather than having to create multiple demos or variant price versions of the same content, Flexion allows the full version to be pre-loaded or downloaded and then a range of purchasing options can be presented. All Flexion enabled games or applications also include a fully dynamic shop front allowing for further up-selling of content.

Now they’ve signed a deal with TCT Mobile so that the pre-loaded content on ALCATEL handsets will be wrapped. The first handset it will launch on is the Android powered OT-980. They’ve also got existing deals with people like Sony Ericsson, Orange and 3UK.

As Jens points out: “More and more people are looking to wrap content, giving customers a better experience and making more money for the industry.”

Yup. Love it.

I’m looking forward to hearing more about this. I think it’s a brilliant way ahead and I hope it’ll help all parties concerned.

It’s now August and the kids have begun playing in the square outside my flat. Well, they do when it’s not pouring down.

So, I’m beginning to really look forward to a holiday too. Its booked for a couple of weeks time and I’ve not even contemplated anything I’ll need. I guess the mad rush around the stores on a Friday evening will have to happen. Sigh.

So, to at least get one thing right, I’ve been contemplating a holiday phone.

Having been stung for £200 for taking my normal mobile to Morocco – Two voicemails kept trying (and failing) to get through. It tried to call me up to three times an hour. Each one ended up counting as a connection (cost 25p) as it went to the Morocco server before going back to my voicemail and ultimately it was rather expensive.

Strangely, I’m no longer with Phone’s 4 U, the company that said – “Sorry, that’s the way it is.”

So, anyway, holiday mobile phones:

If you want a decent camera in the phone then there’s only one option. The Samsung G800. It has an optical zoom so it can actually take decent pictures.

An mp3 phone. There’s the iPhone, obviously. All of the Sony Walkman phones. And, well, just about any other. Many of them contain Wolfson audio chips so will sound as good as the iPod.

If you’re an exercise bunny, maybe the Samsung miCoach too.

But all of these are expensive. And, in reality, you want something cheap.

The Orange site lists three phones for under a tenner. Alcatel OT-E227, Nokia 1208 and Sagem my220x. They’re not exactly sexy. They are very much ‘Fisher Price does phones’. But, you’re not going to care if you lose them.

If you insert a local PAYG sim so you’re not paying international roaming rates when calling the local restaurant to book a table and you’re laughing.

Alcatel-Lucent and Speedcast have teamed up to jointly create a DVB-H platform for mobile TV operators in Asia. The two have said they’ll use their technologies, infrastructure and content delivery products to build the service, which they’ll market to operators in the region.

The pair’s service will cover: the service platform, a security and encryption technology, the platform for encoding into a DVB-H compatible format, the satellite delivery to terrestrial infrastructure and the TV channels themselves.

There’s a lot of advantages in going for a hosted option – it takes a lot of the upfront costs out of the equation and means that you can test out the service without committing a load of cash. That said, it doesn’t leave much room for differentiating services across different operators, but at least it’s a relatively safe way of testing out DVB-H while the business models – not to mention the demand – for mobile TV are being sounded out.

Looks like the Dish Network conundrum is finally settled – the company is indeed getting into the mobile TV game, after announcing it’s teaming up with Alcatel-Lucent to test a system based on the DVB-SH standard.

The test looks like it’s just a small one without any consumers involved – according to the pair, the trial will take place in Dish’s labs from May to August with a view to finding out how well it performs and how much it costs.

The trial seems a little on the small side for anyone seriously thinking about getting into mobile TV any time soon. But if Dish really is just testing the water without a full scale rollout in mind, why did it buy a great big chunk of 700Mhz spectrum recently?
