The deadline for entry submission for the upcoming Meffys Awards 2011 is fast approaching. You’ll need to be quick, but you can still qualify for the £75 special entry fee if you’re a small applications developer. I strongly encourage you to take the time to submit your apps — the resulting exposure (even if you don’t ultimately win) can be phenomenally useful. Even the nominees get exposure at the event — to a lot of very senior people.

You’ve got until Friday evening — that’s tomorrow — to get your entries submitted. It’ll only take about 5 minutes. Use this link to get started.

As a reminder, here are the award categories:

Best Game
Best Music Service
Best TV & Video Service
Best Content
Best Content Discovery & Personalisation Service
Best Technology Innovation
Best Innovative Business Model
Best Innovation in a Mobile First Market

Kudos by the way to OpenMarket and BlueVia who are sponsoring the event.

I wanted to do a quick reminder about the upcoming Meffys Awards (from the MEF).

There’s a special entry rate for developers — just £75. Now, to be clear, developers in this context are defined as those who meet the following criteria:

- Have a maximum of 3 members of staff
- Have been in business for a maximum of one year
- Have had no external investment

If you’re an app developer and you’d like to get on the radar of some of the world’s largest entertainment companies, this new developer rate is a super deal (compared to the standard entry rate of £350).

You can find out a lot more here: http://www.meffys.com/

Right then, thinking caps on and creative brains in gear! The Meffys Awards are now open for entry. The categories span the entire mobile content & commerce ecosystem so there’s sure to be one for your product or service.

If you’re proud of what your team has achieved this year, get some recognition with a Meffys Award.

The winners will be announced at a Gala Dinner on the 7th of July 2011 in Covent Garden’s Connaught Rooms. It’s always a fantastic event and the networking is second-to-none. Indeed, it’s worth going along just for that, even if you haven’t submitted an entry.

Here are this year’s categories:

Best Game
Best Music Service
Best TV & Video Service
Best Content
Best Content Discovery & Personalisation Service
Best Social Media Service
Best Ad Campaign
Best Brand on Mobile
Best Mobile Website
Best Blockbuster App
Best Innovative App
Best Technology Innovation
Best Innovative Business Model
Best Innovation in a Mobile First Market
Best M-Commerce Service
Best Business Intelligence
Best Mobile Connected Device
Outstanding Contribution Award

If you’re a small mobile developer, I’d like to draw your attention to this text in the Meffys announcement:

This year, MEF is also offering a special developer rate of £75 per entry.

A very good rate. You can find out more information here.

The deadline for entries is 6pm on Tuesday 26th of April. Every success!

I’m looking forward to the MEFFYs tonight — the MEFFYs, hosted by the Mobile Entertainment Forum — have swiftly become one of the most prestigious ceremonies on the awards calendar, highlighting the best the mobile entertainment industry has to offer. It’s not just about winning awards or being shortlisted though (congratulations to those on the list!), the networking is simply phenomenal.

This evening I’m guest on RIM’s table. I shall be working hard to avoid anyone seeing my scuffed and well used 9700. (Having bought the phone about a month ago, I spent a whole day in Marlow dropping the phone on the pavement — literally 24 hours worth of ‘butterfingers’. I don’t know what was wrong with me. I really should have got a cover for it.)

I’m working too, though. Indeed I have explained to RIM that I might have to dash off now and again — for I am filming! Oh yes. Thanks to the gracious support of MEFFY’s sponsor, Symbian, We’ve arranged for me to be located in the green room. When the award winners leave the stage after collecting their awards, they will be ushered into the green room where I shall interview them on camera.

So even if you’re not going to the awards (a mistake, if you’re based in London or nearby Europe), you’ll be able to experience the excitement of the winners. They will be channelling it through the camera to you.

If you’re going tonight, look out for me and do say hi.

Kudos to the event’s other sponsors: Dolby, Buongiorno, Symbian, 7Digital, MTS, QuickPlay Media and Vodafone.

I’m judging the Meffys again this year and I’m really looking forward to it. The Meffys, if you haven’t come across them, are run by the Mobile Entertainment Forum to highlight best-in-class mobile entertainment products and services.

Whilst the event is fundamentally about awarding excellence — and winning an award grants substantial kudos — it’s one of those events that I strongly recommend you participate in. The sheer range of calibre people at the awards means that even just being shortlisted will put you on the radar of some highly useful people, not least the array of journalists who’ll be attending. You only have to look down the who’s who on the MEF membership to swiftly recognise this.

There are categories for almost every mobile entertainment related product/service you can think of, but I’d like to draw reader attention to the six new categories for 2010. They are:

- Content Discovery & Personalization

- Cross-Platform Award

- App Store Blockbuster Award

- Innovative App Award

- M-Commerce Award

- Mobile Connected Device Award

I reckon I could name about 10 companies off the top of my head that would suit for each category. I was actually about to start writing out suggestions for companies I’d like to see participate, but that’s not a good idea as I don’t know what I’ll be judging yet.

If you’ve got something that will fit nicely into those categories, get stuck in. (Also, do browse all of the categories)

Entry costs £100 if you’re already an MEF member and £300 if you’re not.

If you are planning on entering, I strongly recommend attaching a link to a Youtube video or even a screencast of your entry because when it comes to deliberations, it can sometimes be really insightful to *see* the product/service in action, not just read about it — especially since so much in the Mobile Entertainment field is visual.

There’s not a moment to lose though. The deadline is this Friday. So there’s still time to do a good job of the entry, but no time to hang around.

Head over to the Meffys site for more information and inspiration. Good luck!

It’s time for the Mobile Industry Review 2008 Awards (formerly known as the SMS Text News Awards — before we changed our name).

It took us a long time. Months, in fact. Regular meetings, arguments, distractions, testing, pondering… but it’s here.

Yesterday the MIR Show team headed down to a swanky hotel in London to film the results… only to be rather impressed with the beautiful summer day. So we took to the Gardens at Temple, overlooking the Thames and delivered the results in glorious sunshine. (It’s rare to get a day like this in London — especially in October. It’s normally soggy rain, rain followed by rain.)

There’s a few contentious results. Even during filming, there were still discussions and rumenations. However I’m pleased to publish them.

We’ll have a full list up online shortly including links to all the nominees and winners.

I’ve just overseen the creation of our fancy envelopes with the results inside.

SHHHH. Can’t tell you who’s won.

Dan Lane, Ben Smith and James Whatley will be presenting alternate categories, listing out the nominations — and then ripping open the envelope, announcing the winner — and then explaining our reasoning.

It’s been a bit of a while coming. The final deliberations took us something like 4 hours. But we’re done and we’re live on Monday.

I think it will probably have to be a separate video from the usual Monday show — so expect two on Monday.

Besides nominations for the Mobile Industry Review 2008 Awards, the other thing I’ve been looking at are trophies.

There’s a world of choice out there, especially if you’d like a cricket ball in a grasping hand, or a football (“soccer”) boot in motion. Or a medal.

I did for a moment drift off in a dream state thinking it would be rather cool to issue medals to winners. I gave that a good five minutes of joy before coming back to Earth. Our awards need to look good in the trophy cabinets of the winners.

11cm, 15cm or 20cm? Well, if in doubt, I’ve been picking the biggest. That’s how entrepreneurs do it, right? Buy the biggest.

And, er, get a discount.

I’ve ordered a few samples with the MOBILE INDUSTRY REVIEW logo engraved.

I was thinking silver. Then I moved to a bit of funky mahogany with silver. I looked at commissioning some sort of Motorola RAZR set into steel or the like — that would have been fun. And prohibitively expensive at 500 quid a pop. We’ve not been able to reach agreement with any potential sponsors ergo since it’s all being funded by yours truly, I’m taking a bit of a more direct approach.

I said to the chap it might be quicker — and definitely cheaper — BUYING 20 RAZRs and supergluing them a fancy stand. The chap was silent and didn’t ‘get me’.

I finally settled on glass. Then I’ve been sat pondering what kind of shape. A star? A weird half circular block?

Or, perhaps, does-what-it-says-on-the-tin (“simple”) rectangular shape?

I’d welcome your viewpoints.

I’ve been going through the nominations for the Mobile Industry Review Awards. There’s a ton. An absolute ton.

The casting vote on nomination is with me. I am, for example, weeding out the dross. For example, whilst I respect and appreciate one reader’s nomination of a screwdriver as the best mobile gadget, on the grounds that it’s ‘a varied, reliable and multifaceted tool,’ that’s not quite what we had in mind.

I’d like to see how far a screwdriver or a stapler would get against some of the other gadgets nominated.

It’s difficult enough deciding the final line-up for each category. Initially I wanted to have 3 nominations in each category, with one winner. But in some cases, I simply can’t decide. I reckon we might end up with 5 in some categories.

I’ve given myself a few more days of deliberating.

Then we’ll be going live with the shortlist of nominations.

After that, I defer to the Mobile Industry Review team.

In alphabetical order:

Ricky Chotai
Dan Ilett
Jonathan Jensen
Samantha Kidd
Dan Lane
Krystal London
Ewan MacLeod
Ben Smith
James Whatley

Everyone will have an equal vote. There’s 9 of us so it’ll be uneven and, I hope, straightforward. But if it’s anything like the amount of time I — and in particular, Dan Ilett — have spent on the nominations, it’s going to be a challenging process.

Just another update. We’ve been doing a ton of work on the Mobile Industry Review awards. It’s been taking up a lot of time. Dan and his assistants have been pouring through the nominations (300+ in all) and next week we’ll be in a position to:

* Announce the nomination shortlist for each category
* Announce the judging panel
* Announce the key date

All very exciting stuff.

I’m looking forward to being able to formally congratulate the winners!

Curiously, one of the most popular categories has been the ‘villain’ category. If you recall, we asked for your nominations for a mobile industry villain and… heh, you weren’t shy. I think I better present that one.

If you’d like your company to be associated with the awards — drop me a note.

More soon!

Hello!

‘Tis I. Ewan. Your friendly mobile blogger from SMS Text News.

Ah hah!

You’ll have noticed that we’ve posted quite regularly about the upcoming SMS Text News Awards.

We’ve had hundreds of entries so far so thank you very much indeed to all who have taken the time to do so.

1. Entry. You need to be quick. We need a description and a note on the category(s) that you are entering for. The deadline is tomorrow. Quick! Email us a holding email if you like as we won’t begin the judging. The email is awards@smstextnews.com.

Don’t be shy. A few enterprising companies have entered for almost every category.

2. Prizes. We were looking at a 6ft bronze statue of SMS Text News contributor, James Whatley, posing with an N95 and an N82 in his hands, for all winners. Whilst we liked this concept and it could look rather fetching in the reception areas of the winners, we eventually decided on some kind of plaque/shield.

3. Award ceremony. Yeah, none of that. We won’t be doing sit-down dinners or black tie arrangements. Not yet. The overhead for this is a bit high. We’ll be announcing the winners on the site during a live chat event.

4. Profiles. We’ll be doing a piece on each winner and we’ll also be doing smaller pieces on the runner-ups. Everyone’s a winner!

5. Judging panel. The panel is being composed as we speak. Image rights are being negotiated. I’m on it, but other participants will be announced momentarily.

Any questions? Mail!
