I had a note in from the CEO Mickey Richardson and the team at Bookmaker.com, one of the leading North American betting firms, regarding the odds for the number of iPhones to be sold today.

Here’s what they reckon:

(The +/- Indicates the Return on the Wager. The percentage is the likelihood that response will occur. For Example: Betting on the candidate least likely to win would earn the most amount of money, should that happen.)

What do you reckon? I think….. 250-750k on day one.

That said, I think my friends might be in the minority. Having taken 2 1/2 months to sell one million iPhones it has taken just one weekend to sell that many iPhone 3G. Admittedly, the new phone is on sale in many more countries than just the US this time.

Yes, there’s a lot of hype but it does look like a gorgeous phone. I have to admit though, I’m still holding out for the OpenMoku Free Runner.

After hearing that the Apple Store might have some iPhones to sell – our hero decamped to Regent Street to see what he could lay his hands on…

Turns out the answer is NOT MUCH.

Dan is still queuing.

The o2 servers have gone down. The Apple Store hasn’t sold an iPhone for the last TWO HOURS..
Shocking.

Can you say: “Worst. Launch. Ever.” ???

Apparently Apple have drafted in o2 staff to do manual sign ups as the o2 systems couldn’t handle the load.

Brilliant.

Bet you wish you’d waited now… Heh

Oh and by the way, I’m hot desking at the Mippin offices in Fulham today, (Hi Guys!), and I’ve just taken delivery of a brand new Nokia N78 + MD4 speakers from those lovely folk at WOM World…

Yes that’s right, the usual launch day farce:

0700: E-mail customers announcing you open for business in 1hr.

0800: Don’t open.

0815: Open.

0845: Slow to a crawl before completing a transaction.

0910: Switch to ‘failover’ plain-styled registration page.

0920: Error on submission of the order.

0922: Don’t bother erroring, just re-load the order page on submission.

Genius.

…and before you say ‘you should have expected it’ …yes, but so should O2.

I may or may not be the recipient of an iPhone 3G on Friday (or indeed 9). I can’t tell. After a significant wait the pleasant O2 lady with a northern accent tells me ‘the internet site is very busy’ and to try again.
