The 10 most popular UK mobile sites are…

Opera has been touting its latest research into the state of the mobile web and aside from pointing out that Opera Mini is now the most used mobile browser out there, it’s been taking a look at some of the content preferences for mobile surfers.

Here’s what the report says:

Tracking the type of content across the top 100 sites visited by all Opera Mini users, we find:
• Social networking is popular worldwide and is the leading source of Web traffic for mobile devices.
• Successful sites on the Web find users on mobile phones, further underscoring the emergence of One Web.
• Consumers desire a rich Web experience regardless of the device they use to access the Web. WAP continues to diminish as more-capable Web browsers are able to display full Web content on mobile phones.
• Nearly a quarter of all traffic is headed to content portals or search engines.

While none of the conclusions are surprising in themselves, it’s interesting to note that most of traffic is users going directly to a site, rather than via their operator’s content portal. Does this mean that the operator portal is set to die off in popularity in the same way the likes of Lycos and AOL portals did as the fixed web matured?

Opera’s report has also got some useful country-by-country comparisons. Here’s the UK section:

The United Kingdom is the world leader in mobile e-mail, although that number remains small. More than 11% of traffic in Q1 was to Web-based e-mail services.

Tesco peppers WAP portal with ads

Apparently, what Tesco Mobile users really, really want is more advertising. After a trial earlier this year that saw advertising put up on the MVNO’s WAP site, Tesco reckons its users are now receptive to viewing advertising when they browse.

According to 4th Screen Advertising, which supplies Tesco’s ads, ads on the site, including promos for Bee Movie, ITV and Nivea got a click-through rate to campaign mini sites of between three and seven percent. The trial also showed that the average age of a visitor to the WAP portal is 36, with a majority of female users.

4th screen also said that 69 percent of users would click on a relevant ad. 69 percent click-through sounds like an amazingly high figure: I can’t remember the last time I clicked on web advert. Are mobile users more susceptible to ads than their internet counterparts, or has the novelty just not worn off yet?

Napster promises five-million song love-in with O2

After getting into bed with the world’s best-known online music retailer Apple to launch the iPhone, O2 has decided to do a deal with former number one pirate music site turned respectable online song shop Napster. The deal will see O2 customers able to access what the operator calls “UK’s largest full track mobile music download service” with a library of over five million tracks.

Once an O2 user buys a song from company’s Active portal, it gets sent both to their mobile and to their nominated email address. During an initial promotional period, Napster tracks will be sold for 99p or 5 tracks for £4.

What’s not immediately clear from O2 is whether the price of the song includes the data costs of delivering the tune to a user’s mobile. Hopefully, it’s just a one off fee – there’s nothing worse than paying twice for the same bit of content.
