Carl Uminski of Trutap
Chief Technical Officer
Trutap
London
Biography:
I started business life working at Heathrow Airport for 8 years as a Systems Engineer, then in 2000 I started up the European business of GoTo.com, which became Overture, which finally became Yahoo! Search Marketing when acquired in October 2003. I was European CTO at Overture building the company from no staff or users to 350 people in 13 countries with a revenue of 500M pa. When Yahoo! acquired us I moved to the Silicon Valley. I lived in San Francisco and did the not so fun commute down the 101 to Sunnyvale everyday. Apart from running Altavista for some time, I also ran the mobile search business for Yahoo! and worked on what is now OneSearch. I moved back to London in 2006 having taken some time off to chill in California and then met with Doug Richard and started work later in 2006 on building Trutap. I am completely in to internet technologies, specifically search and advertising and more recently I've been enjoying the fun navigation of the mobile ecosystem... did I say fun??? ;-)
He Says:
I don't think its officially a quote, but how that linesman could call "goal" against the mighty Watford FC when Reading hit the net I will never know...
We Say:
He's a friendly, energetic chap. We regularly bump into Carl all over the world. If it's not Las Vegas, it's London -- and it's rare to find him without at least two or three Sony Ericssons to demonstrate Trutap's really swish technology.
Favourite Mobile Application / Service:
Apart from Trutap, I think it has to be Google Maps, it just works and saves me printing off so many pieces of paper that I tend to leave on the printer when trying to be organised the day before a meetup.
Most Admired Person In The Mobile Industry:
I don't think I have one... yet...
Most Admired Company In The Mobile Industry:
Am I allowed to say Naspers? They technically are a company and they have a fantastic portfolio...
First Phone:
I don't know the model but it was in 1995/6 a Panasonic analogue device on Vodafone.
Current Phone:
Always a Sony Ericsson, right now a K800i as I tend to carry what my consumers do!
