Three’s X-Series’s unlimited data = proper & proven!

Moment of truth, eh? 😉

Despite the many comments and clarifications posted by Three, most notably on their X-Series blog, quite a few people, and to be honest, me included, were still a little suspect.

For example, I recall someone rather accurately pointing out that the Three marketing said X-Series offered ‘unlimited web browsing’ (or words to that effect) and not unlimited data. I remember a mini debate around whether this was deliberate legalese or if it was simply a consumer friendly phrase.

Well, I can conclusively report that I used up 73 meg of data sending photos from ShoZu, browsing the web and whatnot on my Three handset last month. The image above shows my usage. Look at that, on one day I sent 28 meg! Geez. That’d be expensive if I was a Vodafone normob wouldn’t it?

Anyway, key point: Note the 73 meg, £0.00 bit. Excellent.

If you were slightly hesitant about Three because of that issue, do reconsider. Nearly all of my data usage has been via third party installed applications.

Very exciting.

I’ve swapped to using my N93 on Three a lot more now, but I swap back to the N73 when I want to make use of a lot of the X-Series applications like Skype and Mobilcast.

Ding dong the Data Witch is dead!

  1. Fantastic news.

I was totally sceptical about the whole thing. Thanks for proving me wrong.

    I have two questions though.

    1) Are you saying that you put your 3 SIM card in the N93 and get the X-series benefits? E.g. you could install skype on a WM5 phone and use X-series?

    2) Can you teather the X-Series to a PC? I guess if you can move the SIM, you can use it in a PC with SIM/Cellular modem.

    Steve.

  2. My questions as well! Ewan, you’ve implied that your N93 had access to the unlimited data, if not the proper X Series applications. This is.. interesting.

I know Three has said you’re not allowed to use X Series’ unlimited data or services on a PC, but that does beg the question – will they ever know?

  3. Daniel — The N93 had unlimited internet access, yes.

I can’t access Skype, MSN or the other X-Series applications to download them, because when I do, I’m told that there isn’t a version available. This is quite fair as right now, the X-Series applications are only supported for the Nokia N73 (and soon, I believe, the Sony W950i).

    But data works perfectly.

As for using the services on a PC, I don’t know if they ‘can check’ but really, I would expect them not to bother if you’re occasionally hooking up your laptop quickly. Expect a phone call from their CFO if you’re downloading gigs worth of movies through your X-Series account….!

  4. That’s exciting, but I still can’t get Shozu to work on my N70. I still get the ‘Activation erro, could not connect to network’ message same as I ever did… is this just restricted to x-series?
