I suppose I should be getting over the cost of internet access in places like hotels and railway stations.

Here I am sat in Manchester Piccadilly and I’ve spunked six quid up the wall for 60 minutes wireless access. Yes, it’s extremely fast and yes it worked without a hitch. It’s just… I seriously object to having to pay these sort of rates.

I’ve been up in Bolton for the Christening of one of my colleague’s children — a delightful little girl by the name of Natasha. I stayed nearby at the De Vere Whites Hotel which is actually part of the Bolton Wanderers Reebok Stadium. Rather nifty. Although the £15 quid for 12 hours internet access sucked. Massively.

No wireless. What arse doesn’t put wireless in their hotel? This place installed some ubahn/uban WIRE nework. I had to use my network cable. Ridiculous. I filled in their online feedback form and told them exactly what I thought.

I won’t be staying at a De Vere hotel any time soon, not if they’re going to nail me for £15 for 12 hours.

Anyway the BT OpenZone connection is working perfectly well for me. I’m just annoyed that we still have these sort of rates around.

People like me — ultra geek arses with a direct need to get online — will grudgingly continue to pay. But the 8 people around me (yes, I counted) who all have their laptops out have NOT connected to the internet because it was, in the words of the girls sat across the way, “a total rip off”… they’re the ones you want to be targeting. That disappoints me a little bit.

Those girls have got their (flippin’ huge packard bell) laptop on their table here in the bar — and it’s doing nothing but playing music. Weird, eh? Like a really, really, really uncool looking ghettoblaster.

They’d be online, I’m sure, if it was a quid for an hour. Or if it was £2 for the day. Arse. These things wind me up.
