UK students reckon mobile web is crap

Two-thirds of the 1,000 students surveyed said the mobile web was such a poor experience they gave up trying, says InfoGin .

The study also found 3G phone owners fared little better, despite their faster connections. Only 18 per cent of 3G phone-using students said they were satisfied with the mobile web experience, telecoms.com reports.

Faster connection? Lucky them – I’ve been watching my T-Mobile 3G web’n’walk wobble along like treacle today. Don’t know what they’re worrying about, with the cheap beer down the student union bar. Given a choice between lightning fast mobile web and a cheap booze, mine’s a pint please 🙂

  1. I suspect the state of mobile internet sites is more a legacy of the poor service and high charges delivered by the mobile operators. Why bother investing in extending your online presence into the mobile arena when these two significant barriers to adoption are standing like unattractive doormen at the entrance to a down-beat club.

    My hope is, that those who are considering investing in their mobile services, see the establishment of flat rate data plans as the trigger they need.

    This will be a iterative process, new services – higher usage – operator upgrades – better experience – repeat until all pervasive. The opening up the operator walled gardens will allow the really innovative and entrepreneurial service providers to accelerate this process.

    And maybe, just maybe, it’s not a another false dawn.

  2. Agree with first poster on all points. However, I have to agree – the mobile web, even on mobile sites IS still crap.
    I have a 6280 on Three’s “pure 3g” network, and general browsing is painfully slow. Oddly, once something big starts downloading, then it seems to zip along, but general web browsing feels no different to a dialup modem.

  3. of late my t-mobile web ‘n walk browsing has been flaky to say the least. I use gmail (java) and twitter (using opera mini) a lot and they can’t always connect to update so I have to close the app and open again to force a connection. grr.
