Every Etisalat customer gets voice SMS

Link: Etisalat unveils voice SMS activated for all customers | Etisalat

Mobile customers of Etisalat can now record their personal voice clips of up to 30 seconds instead of typing text SMS and send it to any other Etisalat mobile users, who will receive the SMS notification and the steps to follow to retrieve the Voice message.

There are no handset specifications or settings required for this service. To send a message, simply dial * (star) followed by the mobile number for example dial *0501234567 and press the call button then record your message after the tone and disconnect or press any key to hear more options.

I’ve always liked the concept of being able to record a message and then send it to a colleague. No word on the provider behind this. At first I thought it might be a BubbleMotion service.

Although pretty neat, I’d like the ability to avoid having to enter the recipient’s mobile number each time. I, like everyone else I’m sure, can never remember mobile numbers — I’m still learning my US one at the moment — so if you could pick off contacts from an automated list, or something like that, I’d find this service extra useful.

I reckon we’ve got this kind of thing in the UK — I’ve certainly heard the ‘send a voicemail’ option somewhere on various UK operator voicemail systems…

  1. On Vodafone (my employer) you can dial direct to another Vodafone customer’s voicemail by prefixing their nunmber with 121. So 12107nnnnnnnnn.

I’ve certainly never used it to avoid my boss 😉

It’s a pity that there’s no cross-industry standard for this sort of thing…
